Plaion Pictures has announced that American Dreamer, a new dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage as a new homeowner who gets more than he bargained for, is now available on digital. Dinklage plays Dr. Phil Loder, a low-level economics professor who has always wanted to own a home yet has never been able to afford it. That changes when he runs into a childless old widow, played by Shirley MacLaine, who is willing to sell him her entire mansion for practically nothing. It’s amazing! It’s a dream come true! Wait…is there any catch to this? Almost assuredly, but that’s something Phil will have to find out for himself. It feels like it’s been a While since I’ve seen MacLaine show up in anything. Thirty years ago she was so culturally relevant that parodies of her were always appearing in the cartoons I watched, with her...

This list includes descriptions of violent and graphic movie scenes that may be disturbing to some readers.
In horror movies, the gore isn't just blood and guts designed to repulse — on the contrary, it's an effective storytelling device to convey the consequences and brutality of a scene. It's also a beautifully disgusting art form with superstars as important as scream queens and slashers in horror films. Makeup artists like Rick Baker and Tom Savini have taken the genre from cheesy to realistically gory with a chef's kiss.
To a true gore aficionado, the decapitations and disembowelments are just as key to the movie as the plot or casting. CGI can create everything from the fantastic to the mundane, but it still can't generate believable gore. The best, goriest movies ever made have terrifying, compelling stories and buckets of practical effects, blood, and innards.

Willem Dafoe believes one of his most controversial films is simply misunderstood. In an interview with The Louis Theroux Podcast, the Nosferatu actor opened up about the legacy of Antichrist, the 2009 film written and directed by Lars von Trier and co-starring Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Dafoe and Gainsbourg play an unnamed couple haunted by the death of their son, who retreat to their cabin in the woods in an attempt to grieve and repair their troubled marriage. The man begins having strange visions, while the woman's behavior becomes increasingly violent and sexual in nature. The film is infamous for one particularly graphic scene involving a delicate part of the human anatomy.
Debate about whether the film is misogynistic or subversively feminist began as soon as Antichrist made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Dafoe thinks it's the latter. He told Theroux:
"I think it gets misidentified because of some of its extremeness.

Kill your darlings” is a phrase attributed to William Faulkner, advising writers to resist overuse of their favorite expressions, tropes, characters, etc. This is true for any writing, wherein emotional proximity to the work might manifest into myopic creations in the grander scheme of things. However canonized this belief is, the hypothesis falls apart for Nicolas Winding Refn.
Armed with a style that has only grown more distinctive with every new film, Refn explores fundamental themes and deploys the camera to shift between fluidity and limbo. With sensibilities similar to a master architect, Refn uses frames to create moments that let the viewer internalize, and experience on a physio-psychological level, a creation that does not confine itself to a two-dimensional rectangle, but reminds you of what was felt while watching it. This is the moment the Nicolas Winding Refn effect kicks in, and this is when cinema affects one on a deeply personal level.

1922, 1979, and now 2024. The movie that was a legally distinct, non-copyright infringing version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula has had an impact for over 100 years now. The 1922 version is the one that most people think of not only when the name Nosferatu is said, but when people discuss silent horror films in general. At the other end of the spectrum, we have one of the year’s most hotly anticipated horror films with Robert Eggers releasing only his 4th film on Christmas day that will be his own very unique take on the property. Lost in that shuffle is the 1979 version from famed German director Werner Herzog with his best friend/muse/psychopath actor Klaus Kinski. It isn’t talked about nearly as much and is unique and different enough from the first film that it deserves its own revisit.

In the aftermath of the slew of accounts that have lifted the lid off the tradition of abuse under the nose of the leading kids’ entertainment channel, Nickelodeon, “Mr. Crocket” (2024) bears its own peculiar meaning. The film, “Mr. Crocket” (2024) presents a malefic children’s television show as a realm of contesting traumas, one that is inflicted early on by parental figures and the other peddled by the world of the entertainment industry. Despite having a children’s show and children occupying the central place in the zone of contestation, the film in terms of its repulsive visual conventions of gore shares complicities with such ‘matured’ films like “The House that Jack Built” (2018) and even body horror films like “Society” (1989).
At the heart of the story is a children’s TV show host, imperiled by his own traumatic childhood, in hot pursuit of parents who are abusive or even remotely strict despite being otherwise loveable.

After seeing what the best horror movies of 2023 had to offer, horror fans knew 2024 had its work cut out for it. Fortunately for audiences, the follow-up year delivered in surprising ways, whether through never-before-seen premises, stunning performances, extreme gore, hilarity, and some of the best kills on the big (or small) screen. Prequels to established franchises and narratives that took big swings paid off for the most part, and indie horror continued to prove itself as important to the genre as mainstream movies.
With the taste in the genre different for every viewer, these horror movies span all kinds of flavors, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy. It's too early to determine whether these films will ever be among the best horror movies of all time, but they certainly made the cut for the horror movies that have to be seen in 2024 so far.

No disrespect to Toronto, Vancouver, downtown L.A., Sydney or all the other cost-effective shooting locations that have stood in for New York onscreen, but people can always tell. Imagine if Scorsese had filmed Taxi Driver in Burbank or if HBO had shot Sex and the City in Atlanta. There’s no substitute for Gotham’s grit and glamour.

I think part of our collective fascination with serial killers comes from an empathetic desire to uncover exactly what needs to go wrong for a human being to snap and turn into a murderer. That’s why it makes sense that this form of morbid curiosity lies at the heart of so many successful horror stories, with countless genre filmmakers trying their best to explore the minds of predators.
And in honor of M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller expertly allowing us to see through the eyes of a cold-blooded murderer, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six other serial killer movies told from the killer’s perspective. After all, there are plenty of interesting cinematic killers out there, and not all of them are as charming as Josh Hartnett in Trap.

“Star Wars” is offering up one of the best mysteries it has in quite some while on “The Acolyte.” Who is the Sith Lord who calls himself just The Master and wears a ferocious mask studded with menacing teeth?
This is a franchise that loves a big reveal, after all. And it seems that all signs are pointing in one direction after Episode 4, titled “Day.” The clues to the Sith Lord’s identity abound, and all signs point to Manny Jacinto’s Qimir, a smuggler, fence, and fixer of sorts who’s been aiding acolyte Mae (Amandla Stenberg) with insights into what The Master wants. In previous episodes he gave her the poison that killed Master Torbin, and he’s generally just been “there,” dropping nuggets about The Master, such as that he “likes to collect people.”

By definition, horror intends to scare, startle, repulse, or disturb its audiences. A horror movie usually evokes a sense of dread or genuine fear with scary images, uncomfortable situations, or dark themes. The genre showcases mood and atmosphere to achieve the horror goal. Because the human mind is extraordinary and fear isnt universal, the genre is among the most subjective in the movie world, and just about anything could fall under the horror umbrella.
Diehard horror enthusiasts can easily recognize several trends throughout the genre, including tropes, defining points, subgenre trends, stereotypes, and even problematic elements. For example, a slasher movie likely features specific character archetypes such as the final girl, the bimbo, and the virgin. A slasher probably also follows the rules to survive a horror flick, as explained in the iconic satirical slasher Scream. That said, its within the nature of a horror movie to defy expectations. A...

Copenhagen-based TrustNordisk has just picked up international rights to the Danish drama “Home” by actor-turned director Marijana Jankovic (“The House that Jack Built”).
For her debut feature after 2019’s multi-awarded short film “Maja,” a best short winner at Tribeca, Jankovic has assembled an impressive A-list international cast.
This includes Dejan Cukic (“Snabba Cash”), Nada Sargin (“The Mould”), Zlatko Buric (“Triangle of Sadness”), Claes Bang (“The Square”), Jesper Christensen, Trine Dyrholm (“The Girl With the Needle”) and Lene Maria Christensen (“Unruly”).
Based on a script co-penned by Jankovic with the seasoned Bo Hr. Hansen, behind Thomas Vinterberg’s upcoming series “Families like Ours,” a hit at MipTV, and Babak Vakili (“Outlaw”), the story is inspired by the director’s own experience, and feelings of and reflections on uprootedness.

“It’s f–ing hard to make a good airplane movie,” Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund emphasized multiple times Saturday morning in Cannes as he spoke to international press about his plans for The Entertainment System Is Down, the latest feature he has set to direct starring a buzzy cast led by Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl.
His follow-up to the Palme d’Or-winning satire Triangle of Sadness, The Entertainment System Is Down is another social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.
As we reported earlier this week, Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, have purchased a real-life Boeing 747 where he told the press today he will mount the production over 70 days on a studio lot.
“We bought the plane and it was quite early in the process of the film.

The legendary body horror director David Cronenberg’s new film 'The Shrouds' or 'Les Inceuls' pat the lauded Cannes Film Festival shortly. Longtime Cronenberg fans and newcomers alike are excited to catch the first official reviews of Cronenberg’s cinema. However, Cronenberg himself does not quite match the same level of enthusiasm as some of his fans for the upcoming festival screening of his new film. Cronenberg himself is no stranger to walkouts at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1996, Cronenberg’s now-cult classic ‘Crash’ premiered at the premier festival and was hailed not with the applause it very well might have deserved but instead with walkouts as people were disgusted with the rampant sex and nudity present throughout the film. This is also not a problem that Cronenberg alone has faced. Many icons in the film community, including the likes of David Lynch and Lars von Trier with their films...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's soundtrack authentically captures 1969 with top hits and historic radio clips from Khj. The iconic music in the film complements scenes, enhancing the mood and energy of key moments throughout the movie. Quentin Tarantino's attention to detail in selecting songs and incorporating them into scenes transports audiences back to 1969 Hollywood.
The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood soundtrack tracklist is a great collection of music from the era that director Quentin Tarantino uses to transport audiences to 1969 Hollywood. As an ode to that bygone era, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood impeccably recreates its setting with costumes, styling, and set dressing that accurately captures Los Angeles in the late 1960s. The music is similarly on point, reflecting the tastes of the time and infusing each moment with an energy to match any given scene's mood.

Traditionally, movie theater walkouts are usually associated with the horror genre, with infamous cases ranging from 1973’s The Exorcist (particularly during the crucifix masturbation scene) and even Lars Von Trier’s controversial serial killer memoir, The House That Jack Built.
That being said, there are exceptions to this rule, as some movies manage to terrorize audiences into leaving the theater regardless of genre. One memorable example of this is Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 revenge thriller Only God Forgives, a film so brutal and inaccessible that quite a few critics ended up treating it like a snuff film from hell back when it was first released. However, I’ve come to learn that horror fans have a knack for seeing beyond the blood and guts when judging the value of a story, and that’s why I’d like to make a case for Winding’s near-impenetrable experiment as an excellent horror-adjacent experience.

It's no news Lars von Trier is a provocative filmmaker who enjoys making the public squirm, and all of his movies have stories of people walking out of theaters in disgust. In the case of The House That Jack Built, more than a hundred people left the film's premiere at Cannes, disturbed by the graphic images von Trier crafted for his serial killer story. Since then, The House That Jack Built has been highly criticized for its crude depiction of violence, even though most people only watched the non-director-cut version of the movie, which softens up some of its distressing scenes. However, while von Trier definitely wants to shock the public with The House That Jack Built, the movie is not all shock value. That’s because von Trier uses violence as a tool to discuss the limits of art and freedom of speech, simultaneously forcing the audience to question...

Legally, we cannot say that Josh Greenbaum’s “Strays” is meant for children. The film, despite its dog-centric storyline, is rated R, and frequently shows dogs humping and getting high, and probably will scare kids into thinking Will Forte’s demonic dog-hating Doug is the epitome of the inevitable horrors of adulthood.
Oddly, “Strays” will likely play best to an adolescent audience, because its humor is geared firmly toward the 13-year-old demographic. But that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. To the contrary, “Strays” plays like a slow morphine drip into an oblivion in which Jamie Foxx’s voiceover acting as an adorably emotive Boston terrier named Bug is Oscar-worthy and Will Ferrell’s signature “who, me?” tone (perfected in “Elf”) is on full display as adorable mutt Reggie, a pet who unwittingly escapes a toxic relationship with aforementioned loser Doug. Just let it wash over you.

Producer Marianne Slot will continue her successful collaboration with Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson, following 2018 “Woman at War” with TV show “The Danish Woman” and upcoming feature film “Normal Men.”
“It’s a comedy, as you can imagine. Benedikt Erlingsson and a feminist producer – that’s a good combination,” she laughs, recalling their previous film about an environmental activist going rogue.
“’Woman at War’ was so joyful to make. It is still being shown and used as a reference, even by politicians in many different countries.”
Slot talks to Variety in Locarno, when she is picking up the Raimondo Rezzonico Award, given to industry figures who have played a major role in international production.
A French producer of Danish origin, she has collaborated with such directors as Lucrecia Martel, Lisandro Alonso and Sergei Loznitsa and has been co-producing Lars von Trier’s films since 1995’s “Breaking the Waves,” including “The House That Jack Built.

Asteroid City and The Grand Budapest Hotel director Wes Anderson has revealed some intriguing details regarding his next project, which will star Academy Award winner Benicio del Toro in the lead role. And, as it turns out, that lead role will see the actor appear in every single shot. Discussing what he has planned with the French outlet LeMonde, Anderson reveals that his next movie will ditch the anthological approach as seen in the likes of The French Dispatch, and will take the filmmaker to a much darker place than ever before.
“My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot. I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”

Lars von Trier founded the Dogme 95 movement alongside Thomas Vinterberg in the 1990s as a stripped-down, chaste approach to filmmaking — chaste, at least, on visual terms, as there is never anything chaste about a movie from the director of “Breaking the Waves,” “Antichrist,” and “The House That Jack Built.”
But in reality, von Trier only actually made one movie that adhered to Dogme 95’s criteria: including all shooting done on location, no props or sets brought in, diegetic sound and natural light only, and no credits for the filmmaker. That film was 1998’s Danish comedy-drama “The Idiots,” which upon release at the Cannes Film Festival provoked a firestorm of fiercely divided reactions for its fictionalized treatment of disability. Now, independent film distributor and streaming platform Mubi will re-release the film, restored and uncut, on June 16 theatrically at the Metrograph before it hits streaming on July 7. This story about Riley Keough and “Daisy Jones & the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She walked out into the blue stage lights like she’d been there before, a gossamer cape swirling in the wind as she warily eyed the guitar player standing a few feet away. The wariness gradually melted, replaced by a gamut of emotions: playfulness, then a passion that felt driven and a joy that almost seemed desperate. She was flirtatious and seductive when sharing a microphone, but when her partner left the stage she grabbed hold of a love song and turned it into an instrument of salvation.
This all happened during the concert scenes in the final episode of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” and it added up to one thing: In the title role, Riley Keough was pretty much a rock star. In one way,...

Editor's Note: This interview contains minor spoilers for High Desert.Patricia Arquette has had an amazing film career, starring in films like True Romance and winning an Oscar for Boyhood, but her focus has been on TV lately — to incredible results. In the past few years alone, she’s racked up an Emmy win for Escape at Dannemora and nominations for other dramas The Act and Severance. Like Severance, Arquette’s new project, High Desert, is also on Apple TV, though she gets the chance to flex her comedic talent alongside Matt Dillon. Dillon’s resume is equally impressive, with highlights including an Oscar nomination for Crash and a range of instant classics ranging from slapstick comedies like There’s Something About Mary to crime thrillers The House That Jack Built.

Though you’ll undoubtedly forget many times while you’re watching it, Prime Video’s music drama Daisy Jones & The Six is not based on a true story. At least, not really. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, this series about the titular band was inspired by the real life drama of classic ’70s rock group Fleetwood Mac.
While Fleetwood Mac is very much real (and great!), Daisy Jones & The Six is not real (though also great!). Still, that does not make the Behind the Music-esque drama they experience in these 10 episodes feel any less real. Contributing to that sense of verisimilitude is that the cast of Daisy Jones & The Six all fit their roles to a tee.

Lars von Trier is not melancholic about the state of his career after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The “Melancholia” auteur opened up about his next projects since revisiting his cult favorite ’90s series “The Kingdom” with new season “The Kingdom Exodus.”
“I don’t have this idea that there’s a film I haven’t made yet that has to be made, right now,” von Trier told The New Yorker. “Also, because of this Parkinson’s I’ve picked up, I could live with not doing more films.”
The director added, “I’m very aware of the risk of doing what I call old-man films. These are the films that happen because you have a house that is too big, and you’re striving to repeat your success.”

The director added, “I’m very aware of the risk of doing what I call old-man films. These are the films that happen because you have a house that is too big, and you’re striving to repeat your success.”
Von Trier added that “The House That Jack Built,” the 2018 serial killer film starring Matt Dillon, deviated from the criticisms...

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the miniseries’ premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom Exodus” warrants comparison with David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” for multiple parallels between the two: Both are peak prestige TV with indelible auteurist hallmarks, returning for their third seasons after a quarter-century hiatus. Both invoke the supernatural, concoct elaborate lore and boast captivated cult-like followings.
Though the Danish “Kingdom” is of course much lesser known, its first two seasons did make enough of a cultural impact through international theatrical runs to spawn a Stephen King–created American remake, “Kingdom Hospital.”
“Kingdom Exodus,” making its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, gets much more meta. In the cold open, Karen (Bodil Jørgensen) watches von Trier’s signoff from the previous season’s finale on TV. Frustrated by the series’ loose ends, she heads to bed and...

If “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, then “Antichrist” is a Halloween one.
Lars von Trier’s haunting two-hander about a couple unraveling over the grief of their dead child transforms those horrible circumstances into a gripping, hellish descent replete with jump scares and sudden flashes of blood. It was “elevated horror” before that horrendous term was in vogue, an art movie engineered to immerse its audience in utter dread.
It’s also a stunning example of what the genre does well in disguise. Von Trier funneled his own bout of depression into a shocking eruption of storytelling possibilities. Yes, the filmmaker thanks Andrei Tarkovsky in the credits, but “Antichrist” owes a debt to everyone from Jacques Tourneur to Stanley Kubrick for its gradual escalation of disquieting moments. It’s an eerie movie with payoff, frightening at all the right parts, and never in ways that feel unearned. In that regard,...

Lars von Trier is opening up about his Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis.
The “Antichrist” auteur was diagnosed four months prior to the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where the long-awaited Season 3 of “The Kingdom” premiered 28 years after the TV show first debuted.
During a press conference at the festival, the director admitted to having Parkinson’s symptoms for a long time prior to an official diagnosis.
“That means that I had not lived up to the way I wanted to be as a director, because I was ill,” Von Trier explained to Variety. “And that’s a pity for the [‘The Kingdom Exodus’] actors, but I think they did Ok.”
Von Trier confirmed that he will “take a little break” to focus on his health. “The Kingdom Exodus” is his first project since 2018’s “The House That Jack Built,” which debuted at Cannes.
“I will take a little break and find out what to do.

“The Kingdom” lives.
Twenty-eight years ago, Lars von Trier created the darkly comic miniseries known in Denmark as “Riget,” which follows the lives of the staff and patients at a hospital experiencing weird phenomena — corpse mutilation, a Greek chorus of dishwashers, ghosts in the halls, a doctor rapidly giving birth to a full-sized Udo Kier at the end of Series One.
Nothing unusual to see here in Lars von Trier world. The series, defined by its sepia color scheme and idiosyncratic “Twin Peaks”-like humor, ran for two seasons on Danish TV and on DVD in the U.S. But now, von Trier is back with “The Kingdom Exodus,” the third season hitting major festivals this fall including Venice and TIFF, before the five-part season premieres on Mubi. Watch the opening sequence, a cozy, nostalgic ode to the original but with some cast and obvious technological updates, below.
