When recording the song “Album of the Year #1 Funkateer,” Bootsy Collins had a very specific vibe in mind. “I wanted to give the people what they wanted back in the Seventies: a sense of hope, joy, and freedom,” he tells Rolling Stone. “For the people that were not there, it’s a first taste of what it felt like back in the day to be a ‘Funkateer,’ to have party people that you can look up to, to get down with, without shame, but rather with a form of freedom,...

The writers strike has entered its fifth week and is about to enter its second month and shows no sign of abating.
There were some high-profile reunions on the streets of Burbank today including the cast and crew of Ted Lasso, who were on the picket lines hours ahead of the series finale of their Apple comedy drama, and the team behind hit medical drama ER.
Jason Sudekis, who has been regularly walking the line outside Ted Lasso studio Warner Bros. Discovery, was joined by Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham and Nick Mohammed among others, who were originally in LA to attend a finale event before it was canceled as a result of the standoff.

Also leaving HBO and HBO Max this month is a bevy of Tyler Perry’s Madea movies, “Rounders,” “She’s All That” and “Real Steel.”

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

If you’ve ever been evicted because your landlord wants to “renovate” and hike the rents, seen your favorite local businesses killed to make room for expensive, low-quality replacements, or watched a racially diverse community turn into an affluent white enclave, you probably already suspect gentrification is an expression of pure evil. Well, now you have proof courtesy of the horror-comedy “Vampires vs. the Bronx,” which drops on Netflix this weekend.
From veteran “SNL” director Osmany Rodriguez (“Brother Nature”), “Vampires vs. the Bronx” follows a group of kids who discover that the gentrification affecting their neighborhood is an invasion of vampires. And uh, just in case you thought they might be the friendly kind, one of them explains that they work in real estate, so, yeah, pure evil. As the kids defend the Bronx at all costs, hilarity — and a lot of gory bloodshed — ensues.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Let me tell you something, one of my jobs here at Hitfix is (was) to watch trailers. I've seen a bunch of comedy trailers the last couple of months. They all have Kumail Nanjiani in them. I'm serious. All of them. Fist Fight. Brother Nature. The Late Bloomer. Flock of Dudes. The Dude-Bro Crusade. I made up that last one. I love Kumail. He's the master of deadpan as Dinesh in the great Silicon Valley HBO series and all around funny person. He kills it in just about everything he's in. He's often on the podcast Harmontown (featuring Community auteur Dan Harmon), he's got an active Twitter account, he's in that Nerdist scene with Chris Hardwick. It's time just to give him his own movie. He's like Nikki Minaj.

“Saturday Night Live” has officially unveiled three new cast members for Season 42: Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor and Mikey Day. The trio of featured newbies effectively replace veterans Taran Killam, Jay Pharoah and the one-and-done Jon Rudnitsky, who were all let go this summer. Killam and Pharoah both landed series at Showtime. TheWrap previously reported Day’s promotion from the writing staff. He hails from Nick Cannon‘s improv series “Wild ‘N Out,” where Day was a standout. Interestingly enough, Day wrote a lot for Killam; the two buddies also penned feature film “Brother Nature” together. Also Read: 'SNL...

As the specialized film industry concentrates on the Toronto International Film Festival, new movies do continue to open around the country.
The leading opener this weekend, Gravitas Ventures’ “For the Love of Spock,” had a strong initial take via Video on Demand home-viewing venues.

“For the Love of Spock” (Gravitas Ventures) – Metacritic: 74; Festivals include: Tribeca 2016; also available on Video on Demand
$42,000 in 34 theaters; PTA: $1,235
The key number isn’t the slight theatrical take. It’s the reported $400,000 initial take on streaming platforms, where it is ranked best among independent and documentary releases. “Star Trek” and Leonard Nimoy fans found the vehicle to connect with for the 50th anniversary of the original TV show’s debut.
What comes next: Expect ongoing interest for this, mostly in home viewing.

Uptight politician Roger (Saturday Night Live's Taran Killam, who also cowrote) is about to propose to his girlfriend (Gillian Jacobs) at her family's lake house. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson pulled double duty on Wednesday night, attending two high-profile events in NYC. First, the longtime couple showed support for Tom Ford at his fashion show, and then they hit the red carpet at Rita's movie premiere for Brother Nature. The upcoming comedy, which stars Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan, is centered around a politician who plans to propose to his girlfriend at her family's lake house, but things go south once he meets his future brother-in-law. Tom and Rita have nearly 30 years of marriage under their belts, and much like Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, the pair clearly knows the secret to a happy relationship.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

After nearly three decades on the small screen, the hit reality series Cops is now looking to jump to the big screen. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is attached to direct and produce a feature adaptation of the series, which is currently in the midst of its 29th season airing on Spike TV. John Langley, who co-created and holds the rights to the series, will serve as a producer.
Deadline reports that the original Cops concept will be turned into an "edgy narrative feature" with a buddy cop angle, which is said to be similar to Lethal Weapon. Cameron Fay (Dance Camp) has come aboard to write the script, although no specific plot details were given at this time. Ruben Fleicher will produce alongside John Langley and David Bernard.

If someone placed a gun to your head and forced you to describe the upcoming Lorne Michaels-produced comedy Brother Nature based solely upon that information, odds are you’d survive just fine. “Well,” you’d probably say, “I’m guessing it stars two of Saturday Night Live’s current cast members, one of whom plays an uptight prick who spends two hours being tortured by a dumb but well-meaning clod, who’s played by the other one. Based on the title, the two main characters are either brothers or brothers-in-law, and the whole movie takes place on a camping trip— No, it’s a lake house. Of course, there will be plenty of other SNL and SNL-adjacent comedians filling out the smaller roles (probably wearing stupid wigs). There will be at least one instance of testicle battery, one instance of a wild animal causing a ruckus, and some...

The Locarno Film Festival kicked off on August 3 and will run until the 13. Actor Bill Pullman, known for his film such as “Spaceballs,” “While You Were Sleeping,” “Casper” and “Independence Day,” received the Swiss festival’s Moët & Chandon Excellence Award.
IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with the actor about his career, his writing and how he balances Hollywood and indies. He also moderated a special conversation with Pullman where fans and attendees could listen as he discussed his early days as a college student and not being on the acting track, to working on the big-budgeted productions that got him noticed.

"We're brothers now." A new comedy from the people behind Saturday Night Live. Brother Nature is an indie comedy produced by SNL's Lorne Michaels, featuring at least four SNL cast members. The story involves a straight-laced politician named Roger, played by Taran Killam, who goes on a retreat to a cabin with his dream girl, played by Gillian Jacobs. But in the woods they meet his soon-to-be-brother-in-law, played by Bobby Moynihan, and his family, and things get wild as expected. Also featuring Rita Wilson, Bill Pullman, Ellen Bloodworth, Sarah Burns, Giancarlo Esposito, Rachael Harris, Kumail Nanjiani, Kenan Thompson and David Wain. This is chock full of really dumb humor that makes me wonder if it's going to feel like a very drawn out SNL skit that just doesn't work on the big screen. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Matt and Oz's Brother Nature, from YouTube:...

If you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live (and some other NBC shows), look no further than this new Lorne Michaels-produced comedy. Directing duo Matt Villines and Osmany Rodriguez‘s feature debut, Brother Nature, follows a by-the-books politician named Roger (Taran Killam) and his dream girl (Gillian Jacobs) as decide they deserve a break. With plans to propose, they take a retreat at a cabin to meet his soon-to-be-brother-in-law (Bobby Moynihan) and family, who makes the trip less of a time to relax and more of a disaster. As his plans go awry, Roger tries to assimilate into a family that proves much more trying than he thought.
Villines and Rodriguez have both worked on the show The Last Man on Earth, along with making a slew of video shorts before this debut, which also stars Bill Pullam, Ritz Wilson, Rachael Harris, and Kenan Thompson. See the trailer below,...

Pregnancy can be challenging and scary for any young woman, but it’s even more frightening when you don’t know how you got pregnant. In the new body-horror comedy “Antibirth,” hard-partying stoner Lou (Natasha Lyonne) wakes up one morning to discover that she’s pregnant despite not having sex in over a year. Living in a small Michigan town, Lou and her best friend Sadie (Chloë Sevigny) try to discover how this could happen in a drug-addled haze, but when a mysterious stranger (Meg Tilly) raises the possibility of something otherworldly, it throws everyone for a loop. “I always loved posters just like I love scores and soundtracks,” Nicolas Winding Refn once told IndieWire. “It’s just something around cinema that is more about your imagination, more about what you’re going to be seeing rather than what it is you’re actually seeing. I find that very intoxicating.” Unfortunately, the art of the movie poster has become something of a dying breed in the age of blockbusters and studio tentpoles. For every couple ingenious one-sheets, there seems to be about a hundred carbon copies.

The Lego Movie may have turned out great, but that doesn’t mean that every kid’s toy should have its own film. According to Deadline, Envision Media Arts and Pez Candy have made an agreement to create an animated feature film about Pez dispensers and the candy they dispense. While no director has been confirmed, Envision has already nabbed Cameron Fay (Brother In Laws) to write the script. This comes after the news of Sony making a film about emojis, confirming that the trend of making everything into a movie is going strong.
Pez dispensers and candies were created in 1927 in Austria, but became a huge hit in the 50s when the company started making the dispensers into actual characters (such as Mickey Mouse) to appeal to kids. This, of course, then spawned dispensers with Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters to take over the world (or America,...

Oh, The Lego Movie... What hath thou wrought upon us? While we loved the adventures of Emmet and the rest, it has opened the doors to every other commercial touchstone and idea to flood into the film market. There’s already an Emoji movie in the works and now the company behind Pez sweets is looking to get a piece of that action. The venerable 88-year-old candy company, provider of those little fizzy sweets dispensed from the ratcheting heads of a variety of heads ranging from nature and people to superheroes and other pop cultural icons, has hatched a deal with Envision Media Arts to develop a film based on the plastic gadgets and their sugary torpedoes.Cameron Fay, who has graduated from writing and directing short films to co-scripting Bill Pullman/ Rita Wilson-starring indie comedy Brother In Laws, is attached to crank out the words for this one.
