Akuma-kun (1989)

Review by ja_kitty_71

Akuma-kun

10/10

Mizuki's manga adapted to animation with a catchy opening song

As I had said, I stumbled upon "Akuma-kun" after watching the opening sequence of the anime series. I had finally found the series on two anime streaming sites. When I watched the series, only episodes 1-13 had subtitles. In the episodes that lacked subtitles, I had to infer the stories by observing the characters' actions. Additionally, one episode was missing!

Anyway, the main character in this series is Shingo Umoregi, who, like the previous protagonist, is well-versed in demonology and tarot. One day, Shingo soon encounters Hyakume and realizes too that he's an Akuma (demon). Hyakume doesn't object when Shingo asks to take him home to his family. However, Shingo's mother makes Hyakume sleep in the family doghouse for the night. In the morning, Hyakume takes Shingo to the domain of demons and the "Invisible School." They both see Professor Faustus II, the headmaster, who sees Shingo as the chosen one-Akuma-kun, who would lead both the human and the demon worlds in an era of peace. With 12 pure-hearted demons, including Mephisto II, Shingo battles the wicked demons that threaten humanity. That's all I know so far. I have found that the sites have shut down or have video playback errors, so I cannot currently recommend where to watch the series.

I love this series for its animation and soundtrack, including its catchy opening song. After watching the series, it was hard to choose a favorite character, so I would say my favorite characters are Komori-Neko (Bat Cat), Tori-Otome (Bird Maiden), the two Pixies, and Yuko. So above all, I love this series. I hope DiscoTek will license the TV series and two films for North American DVD or Blu-ray. I also want someone to translate the original manga into English.
