My Isekai Life (2022)

Review by misteradi

My Isekai Life

5/10

Uninspired

First off, let me preface this by saying this series doesn't do anything actively bad. Unfortunately, I can't really find anything to actively praise, either.

The series starts out in the other world immediately, while backstory is drip-fed and limited to a few flashbacks without any information beyond "protagonist was an office worker". The setup of gaining a second character class, once it comes up, is checked off in a minute or so, and feels pretty lame. Not the OP powers itself, that's a staple of Isekai anyway and I don't mind it, but they feel interchangeable / boring, for lack of a better phrasing.

The remainder of the show feels overall uninspired, and it feels to me like it lacks "heart". The OP doesn't really show any emotions or character growth, and almost seems depressed or bored to death, even while slinging spells in the middle of a heated action scene.

The other characters aren't much more interesting either, lack character depth, and their personality can generally be summarized in half a sentence, like "wise stereotypical smith" or "hospitable innkeeper", and I can't even really remember any others. The villain and his (non-protagonist) nemesis, to avoid any spoilers, are just barely more interesting.

Some episodes also feel pretty lazy. For instance, I remember episode 7 having lots of zoom shots. That would be fine if used in moderation and with voiceover, but showing a zoom-in for 10 seconds with nothing happening screams "budget cuts" / "time pressure".

In the end, I would say the series lacks "life". Things are happening and words are spoken, but nothing noteworthy. Chances are I'll have forgotten the majority of the plot in a week or two.

This show could have been better, but in its current state it just feels lackluster.
