Intriguing Authenticity
This is a low key, highly realistic character study about a young boy called Mads growing up in Norway in the 1990s. His family get the internet and he quickly discovers the world of (very slow!) online porn.
Fascinated by this, he regularly goes online to view porn pics whilst also exploring his body and the world around him. This adult awakening in him is juxtaposed with his juvenile self as he plays with friends outside. This is a nice touch from the director who slowly separates the two clashing forces within Mads as we see him maturing.
The attention to detail regarding the 1990s, the understated yet engaging performances from the actors, especially Heine Dybvig as Mads, make this film an intriguing, celebrated short that is worth watching if you like subtle, authentic story telling.
Do not expect fireworks and shouting matches. Expect to watch a child make the awkward transition into his teen years. This is one of writer / director Truls Krane Meby's best known films and rightly so.
