Nobita no uchû shô-sensô (1985)

Review by Jeremy_Urquhart

Nobita no uchû shô-sensô

7/10

A series high so far.

If anything, I was a little upset there wasn't more blatant Star Wars plagiarism, given the original title is Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars. There's a cameo from R2-D2 and C3PO in the opening credits or something (I dunno, this whole thing scrambled my brain in a mostly good way), and then some space battles near the end take influence from the space battles in Star Wars, but it's otherwise a film that's willing to homage a bunch of different things. Most are pretty broad (a bit of Jaws, a bit of King Kong, and some kaiju stuff near the end), but it's fun. It's decently silly fun.

I doubt any Doraemon film will have anything amazing to offer narratively, but this one was paced a little better and felt a touch more consistent, in terms of mostly centering on one conflict. I liked some of the characters introduced here, and hope they're not one-offs (especially the dog who didn't know how to shut up. He was really funny instead of annoying).

Bring on more of these, maybe? Some of the problems I had with the previous five still show up here, but didn't feel quite as glaring or detrimental.
