Rodney Dangerfield in Ladybugs (1992)

Review by SnoopyStyle

Ladybugs

6/10

fine with low expectations

Top salesman Chester Lee (Rodney Dangerfield) is desperate for a promotion to pay for his upcoming wedding. The big boss needs a new coach to lead his sponsored championship girls soccer team especially with his daughter Kimberly Mullen (Vinessa Shaw) joining. In order to impress him, Chester pretends to be a former soccer player and takes over the coaching job with his assistant Julie (Jackée Harry). It's a rebuilding year with only one player returning. The girls are not good. In desperation, Chester recruits his girlfriend's troubled son Matthew (Jonathan Brandis) to play with the girls. It helps that Matthew has a crush on Kimberly.

It's a convoluted premise although not the worst. It's trying too hard. It's easy to see why this was critically panned. To begin with, it's not well-made. Brandis is a pretty boy which helps in the cross-dressing. His tragic end is still a decade away. At this point, he still could be the next big thing. I would have thought that he would try to teach her soccer while being a boy. He could be his own twin and they could do more screwball comedy with that idea. This does have Rodney being Rodney and there are some surprisingly adult jokes. It comes down to expectations. It could be passable for kids and Rodney fans. I don't think there is too much crossover with those two groups.
