Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts (2011)

Review by skylerwife

Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts

8/10

Even the weakest Fallout: New Vegas story DLC is still great

Fallout: New Vegas DLCs are very different from one another and strive to provide the player with completely different experiences. We've got intense survival horror in "Dead Money", fun creative open world shenanigans in "Old World Blues" and a linear but very epic journey in "Lonesome Road". All of them are amazing in their own way.

"Honest Hearts" doesn't feel like it has some unique gameplay loop to it that significantly distinguishes this DLC from the rest. It's just a new region. The story is also quite bland. The conflict between local primitive tribes just isn't as gripping or deep as the other major storylines from this game. The main antagonist is also one of the most forgettable bad guys in the series.

But as for the positives, the atmosphere is very pleasant - Zion national park is easily one of the most beautiful regions in the franchise. I really enjoyed exploring this place.

The main quest itself is not that memorable, but one specific character, Joshua Graham, is amazing. Everything about him is just so good, from his character design to his voice, writing and character arc. Many people believe that one should play this DLC just for this character alone and I can understand them.

For explorers, I'd recommend paying close attention to notes and terminal entries. Zion has some pretty interesting lore, especially everything around the character of Randall Clark, who played a vital role in this region's culture.

All in all, this DLC is quite good. Although it isn't as memorable or creative as the other 3 story DLCs for Fallout: New Vegas, it's still a well-made product that deserves at least a bit of praise.
