Underrated gem
This is a movie which was not widely shown, I am sure of that. What I like the most in this movie is fact that the lead character is actually evil, purely evil, as was Robert Mitchum in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. But here the atmosphere is special to the period and also surroundings, settings, nothing to do with the Charles Laughton's masterpiece, except this more or less same lead evil character impersonating a priest. This is slow but riveting, sometimes disturbing because of the anti hero character about whom we know nearly nothing at all. As you have guessed this movie was not made to make gross at the box office, and that's precisely what I love. This is a beautiful and rare gem for me.
