Tanya Roberts and Robert Davi in Legal Tender (1991)

Review by Uriah43

Legal Tender

4/10

A Somewhat Lethargic Action-Thriller

This film essentially begins with a man named "Bud Rennick" (Charles McCaughan) and his sister "Rikki Rennick" (Tanya Roberts) operating a small nightclub in Los Angeles. Bud typically tends the bar with an assistant by the name of "Lorrie del Luca" (Maria Rangel) while Rikki is often involved in an illegal poker game in the back room which helps to pay the bills to a certain extent. As it so happens, Bud is a heroin addict and his habit, along with the precarious nature of the gambling operation, eventually puts a strain on the club's finances and, as a result, Rikki goes to see a well-known money lender by the name of "Mal Connery" (Morton Downey Jr.) to help them out. What she doesn't know is that Bud has inadvertently received a computer disc drive from his pusher "Bobby Westcott" (Robert Dean) which implicates Mel in a number of drug-related activities--and Mal is determined to retrieve the disc and kill everyone who has had access to it. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this turned out to be a relatively standard 90's action-thriller which could have used a bit more suspense and some better action scenes. Likewise, although Tanya Roberts, Maria Rangel and Wendy MacDonald (as "Verna Wheeler") were certainly quite attractive, none of them were really able to overcome the rather lethargic plot and I have rated this film accordingly. Slightly below average.
