Karate Ghost (2023)

Review by kannibalcorpsegrinder

Karate Ghost

7/10

A highly enjoyable cheesy-filled indie effort

After buying a supposedly abandoned dojo, the new owner finds the site hides a sacred piece of clothing containing the ghost of a vicious martial arts master, and when the ghost is released and terrorizes the community he's forced to rely on the fighter who stopped him before to do so again.

Overall, there's quite a lot to like with this one. That's built entirely around the overtly obvious and generally cheesy approach which comes across from just about every angle here. The silly storyline here, involving a martial arts tactic so deadly a man trains for years to master the style to seek revenge against the fighter who killed his brother in an underground fighting ring only for the homicidal ghost to come back to attack those around the dojo for revenge against what happened to him, offers a charming and endearing setup for this kind of film once we get to the new owner of the facility taking charge. With this going alongside the equally goofy scenarios and attitude to everything, the film's tone is quite endearing with how everything plays out due to this setup. That is thankfully and obviously taken to its extreme with the matched action featured here. As no one here is clearly fit enough to be considered a martial arts master but treated as such in the various confrontations and battles that are on display, the martial arts here has the same cheesy and goofy approach. The ghost kills here where it appears to take on random strangers and using his martial arts skills to rip them apart simply continue this theme as the films' atmosphere creates a spectacularly charming feel. This one does manage to go on a bit too long with some of the scenes here going on way too long going for the type of cheesy joke or goofy setpiece that could've been accomplished much quicker, but beyond this and the low budget for all of these factors, there's not a lot to dislike here.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, and Brief Nudity.
