Expect the Unexpected
A film destined to be forever labelled as 'quirky' or 'winsome', the coming of age tale of Jon and Edith, each with their own challenges, in an otherworldly village that wants to be a town but is little more than a bus stop, shop and radio station.
For all its charm, however, the story has dark undertones and is far from whimsy. There is prejudice, abuse and treachery, and even the love is twisted and often self-interested.
There are shades of Twin Peaks, Little Britain and countless folk horrors, but I suspect many who grew up in rural areas will sense familiarity in the settings and personalities here.
Recommended, but don't expect Disney, or an Ealing comedy.
