Allmen (2016)

Review by altereggo123

Allmen

8/10

Highly implausible, but very entertaining and beautiful to watch

This series deserves brownie points for originality. It has elements of other crime and caper films and shows, but I can't recall anything quite like it. The dialogue sparkles and is filled with interesting trivia and witty bon mots from everyone from Chinese philosophers to Herman Melville to tennis champion Ivan Lendl. There is art, intrigue, action and humor set in spectacular settings, indoors and outdoors, far removed from the ugliness of real life. Silly, but fun.

If I have a quibble, it involves the casting. The actor playing Allmen seems a bit old for the role. It's odd that beautiful, rich young women swoon over such a character and repeatedly come to his aid, given his age and appearance (not to mention the fact that he is perennially broke). If he were younger (or maybe if the women were older), it would be easier to imagine him as their pet. Similarly, the Bulgarian-born actor playing his side-kick Carlos doesn't seem like the Guatemalan immigrant he is supposed to be. Both actors are excellent, but I don't think they completely overcome the miscasting.
