Sous la braise (2022)

Review by Tweekums

Sous la braise

7/10

High Heat

As this Mexican series gets underway Poncho learns of his brother's murder. He was a journalist investigating a story that led to a Mexico City fire station. Poncho decides to find out what happened so heads to the fire station and ends up joining the crew. Meanwhile Ricardo Urzúa arrives and takes over the job of running the station; he has a secret though; he has just ended a twenty five year prison sentence for murder! Shortly after arriving Poncho gets involved with Olivia, the only woman on the team. If that weren't enough we get numerous subplots involving various firefighters and the people who live in the boarding house opposite the station which is run by the widow of the former chief; these are a group of women and the owner's gay son who fancies one of the firemen.

This series is melodrama, pure and simple. The central story of the hunt for the killer of Poncho's brother's killer and the truth behind Ricardo's motives would probably have been enough to sustain the series but every character in the fire station and boarding house seems to have drama in their lives. This isn't a major problem; it means there is always something happening and there are plenty of twists; some more plausible than others. There is a fair amount of sex and nudity but this reduces in later episodes as the plot homes in on the killer. Each episode provides tense moments and frequently end with cliff-hangers. The acting is solid; sometimes it feels like there is some overacting but I thought that suited the melodramatic nature of the series. Overall I found this to be a fun series.

These comments are based on watching the series in Spanish with English subtitles.
