Claudia Roset and Mireia Oriol in Alma (2022)

Review by Tweekums

Alma

8/10

The Girl in the Mirror

This Spanish series opens with a group of students are enjoying a school trip in the mountains. As they head home the coach they are travelling encounters dense fog on a winding road. Something goes wrong and the coach crashes; many of the students are killed. One of the survivors is Alma, a girl who after the accident has amnesia. She has no memory of family of friends but has a feeling that something is wrong. This includes her seeing ghostlike apparitions. There is more talk of the supernatural as a friend's grandfather talks of an ancient myths involving a demon that possesses those close to death.

I though this series got off to a great start. We are effectively introduced to key characters before the main story gets underway. There is a great sense of dread as they head through the fog. Following the accident there is the question of who will have survived and just what has happened to them. Things do slow down a bit during the middle of the series but pick up again with some interesting twists as we approach the denouement. The locations, in Asturias region of Spain are great, they add a great sense of atmosphere; beautiful in a rugged way, one could easily believe strange things might happen there. The cast is solid; in particular Mireia Oriol who plays Alma. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to anybody looking for an interesting chiller.

These comments are based on watching the series in Spanish with English subtitles.
