L'aventurier de Séville (1954)

Review by ulicknormanowen

L'aventurier de Séville

5/10

Figaro ci, Figaro là

Keeping from Beaumarchais 's play ("le barbier de Séville" )a few proper nouns (Figaro ,Rosine, count Almaviva ,Bartolo) , this film is a free (and I mean free) adaptation called "the adventures of the barber of Sevilla); all the initial comedy took place in the same place ,Bartolo's house, the eventful screenplay is (roughly) divided into two parts and takes the viewer to Puerto Rico : the epic adventures of Figaro and a gang of thieves ,then the love rivalries between Figaro and the count :gone are Figaro 's reproaches against the privileges of the aristocracy (even more present in the follow-up play "le mariage de Figaro" where the hero boldly tells the noble : " What have you done to earn so many advantages? You took the trouble to be born, nothing more. ", which predated the fall of the Ancien Régime"in 1789 )

It's essentially a vehicle for bel canto singer Luis Mariano ,then the female audience's idol ;and sing ,he does , all along the movie ,on Francis Lopez 's music ,operetta past master (and not Rossini's opera). The first part is eventful ,and if you do not ask too much, rather entertaining :the best moment happens in the English fortress : Figaro and his thieves-turned - corsairs think that they are going to be hanged ;but the enemy uses the gallows for another unexpected thing .
