Les quatre vérités (1962)

Review by ma-cortes

Les quatre vérités

7/10

Sympathetic French/Spanish antology picture formed by four well-directed sketches

"Les quatre vérités" aka "The Four Truths" is an anthology film that consists of four segments interwoven by brief cartoon images about animals , being all loosely parodying fables from the 17th-century French poet Jean de la Fontaine. The US cut usually features only 3 segments shot in Paris , France , being cut the best shot in Madrid , Spain : "La mort et le bûcheron" directed by Luis Garcia Berlanga . 4 Witty and Wonderful Tales of Marriage and What Comes Before...And After!

Amusing and fun anthology picture with diverting segments, giving nice performances , some brief moral teachings and likeable events . The funny first segment title ¨The Crow and the Fox¨ or "Le corbeau et le renard" directed by Hervé Bromberger , deals with substitute prosecutor Corbeau (Michel Serrault) and his sweetheart (Anna Karina) , the latter is chased and sieged by lots of suitors since she lives in a town full of single men : 4.300 , while her hubby attempts to protect and control her against the sexual predators . Their neighbor (Jean Poiret) is determined nevertheless to service the missus. The second story "The Tortoise and the Hare" directed by Alessandro Blasetti (or segment "Le lièvre et le tortue") regarding a jealous wife (Monica Vitti) who decides to win her adulterous husband (Rossano Brazzi who cheats her with Sylva Koscina) back by loving other seducing men . In this episode Monica Vitti won David di Donatello Golden Plate Awards 1963 for her performance. The fourth segment "Death and the Woodcutter" results to be better than the others , being directed by the great Spanish director Luis Garcia Berlanga , concerning a common organ grinder (street performer who plays mechanical musical instrument called street organ on the Madrid town for a living) , he is nicknamed El Rubio (Hardy Krüger) and driven to the edge of sanity by bureaucracy represented by a strict State Official (Agustin Gonzalez) , it was cut from the US release for its serious/comical tone. The final tale "Two Pigeons" directed by Rene Clair , is about a young man (Charles Aznavour) and a cover girl (Leslie Caron) who accidentally lock themselves up in an apartment , after some messes and confusion both of whom , the helpless couple, eventually end up falling in love for each other. Rating . 6.5/10 . Decent French/Spanish comedy for lovers of the splendid all European-star-cast.
