The Dark: The Great Deceiver (2020)

Review by collectoblesimdb

The Dark: The Great Deceiver

4/10

Good Intentions, But Dreadful Acting & Production Quality

I have no doubt that the writers and producers of this low budget, "wannabe" film had their hearts and intentions in the right place. The conception and storyline are generally very good. Be that as it may, the overall production quality, acting, and pace is dreadful. The entire cast act like rank amateurs - as though they were volunteers from some local Baptist church. They either "over act" or deliver their lines awkwardly like teenagers forced to take part in a high school play.

The pacing of each episode is painfully slow and plodding. The story flow and undynamic delivery is just terrible! You won't see any dynamic, fast-paced action scenes here that add impact and believability. For example, even though the characters are supposed to be on-the-run and scared for their lives, they mope and saunter as though they were merely taking a Sunday stroll.

The constant drone of the dreary soundtrack is dismally irritating. I suppose the producer's intention was to create ominous tension, but instead it just drones on wearily making for a tiresome exercise of one's patience. This in conjunction with weak dialogue volume in many scenes, just makes for a decidedly monotonous viewing experience.

I do wish that ALL Christian movie makers and actors would take cues and lessons from high quality, Hollywood-grade productions such as those produced by Pureflix and Sherwood Pictures. There's really no excuse for Christian films to be produced in such an amateurish fashion as this mini series was. If this is the best media presentation that Christian film makers can offer, it's little wonder the world doesn't take The Gospel (Or Christians) seriously! Everything about this film screams AMATEUR - from the acting and hoakey, pokey dialogue through to the overall production quality. It's a shame that this offering suffers from so many negatives - given that the subject matter is so very, very important.
