Bandhu

7/10

Danny Denzongpa was super. Archana Puran Singh sizzled.

Bandhu review :

After the super hit Hum (1991), Romesh Sharma produced this film which was a remake of a successful Nepali film called Saino (1987). Danny Denzonpa, who was main villain in Hum, was lead in that film and he took over multiple responsibilities of co-writer and actor of Bandhu which was ready for release in 1992.

Unfortunately, the film couldn't find any distributors which led to it being telecast on Doordarshan as a TV serial titled Ajnabi with certain additional scenes shot to increase the length.

The plot revolved around a couple who shift to their North eastern village and do well initially until the husband (newcomer Abhishek) suddenly dies. The wife (Geetanjali) is tormented by the village chief (Deb Mukherjee) and then, an uninvited stranger (Danny) arrives to protect her and her kiddo Binoo (Pinaki).

Danny and Pinaki shared a great rapport together. Their dosti wale scenes were truly endearing. The other cast and crew were earnest even though producer Romesh Sharma was hopelessly miscast. Abhishek appeared a bit awkward in such a pivotal role, specially in the crucial love making scene he had with the sexy Archana Puran Singh.

The TV serial appeared a bit stretched but the film, available now on Youtube, is a good watch. One of my lockdown viewing; I can recommend it to all. Safely.

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
