Josette Daydé and Rellys in Le Roi des resquilleurs (1945)

Review by ulicknormanowen

Le Roi des resquilleurs

5/10

To pay: this word is no longer part of my vocabulary.

It was Jean Devaivre's first feature ,after some shorts , a director who was not to make memorable works with the exception of "la ferme des sept péchés",and ,at a pinch, "la dame d'onze heures",both follow-ups to "le roi des resquilleurs " .

Mimile (Rellys ,whose best films are Marcel Pagnol's ,particularly "Manon Des Sources ") never pays :he always gets it on the sly , whatever the place he's in : the restaurant , the racecourse, the boxing ring or the velodrome ; to seduce a posh woman,he passes himself off as a baron ,but she soon discovers that he and his pal are street singers or do other odd jobs .

The problem is that too much time is given over to the songs ,dance ,pure filler , at least to today's eyes .Besides, although at the top of the bill ,Jean Tissier's part is much too short.

There are funny scenes ,the way to leave the restaurant after eating caviar and drinking champagne is good fun ,and the rugby game is a comical moment too; but these sequences are few and far between and do not make it as a whole.
