Gemma Arterton in National Theatre Live: Saint Joan (2017)

Review by peterquennell

National Theatre Live: Saint Joan

10/10

Time for Gemma Arterton >>> Broadway

We do a lot of Broadway, maybe 25 shows a year, and have seen most of the top British acting talent "on the boards" including Mark Rylance - six times. I haven't seen this St Joan but would see anything from the National Theater and from Donmar if it transferred here.

The 10 stars is really for Gemma Arterton who is a wonderful presence in all her films. Her stint here in NYC is really overdue. I said the same thing once to Hattie Morahan outside the National Theater - and lo and behold a year or two later she did turn up, as much praised lead in an Ibsen play!

The 10 stars is also for LittleSongbird's review here, and specifically for this which really made me laugh.

"The production does well in keeping the characterisation as balanced as possible... The Inquisitor particularly is a problematic character in trying not to take sides".
