Tino Rossi in Lumières de Paris (1938)

Review by ulicknormanowen

Lumières de Paris

I guess they got no way of knowing How lonesome I can be !

Plot :Carlo Ferrari (Rossi) is the toast of the town ; all the girls love him and his songs can be heard all day long on the radio .But he has not found love .One fine day , he and his good pal Toto (Raymond Cordy) ,a failed cycle champion, go dancing in the guinguettes (open-air café ,a thing of the past). They meet two girls ,Renée (Michèle Alfa) and Yvonne (Marie Bizet). To fool Renée , Carlo pretends he is a driving instructor and offers the girl free lessons.

A vehicle for singer Tino Rossi (who sings "Paris, voici Paris" " Au bal de l'amour" and Schubert's "ave maria") , originality is not the screenwriters' forte .Toto serves as a foil to the handsome singer and his idyll with Yvonne plays the same role .

Richard Pottier ,nonetheless, shows some flair as far as comic is concened ;he directed the first version of "some like it hot" ("fanfare d'amour "in the thirties)after all and his sense of humor emerges now and then :Alphonse the pet otary (you read well) demands (through a written sign ) fresh fish, not canned (tinned) sardines ! "You wonderfully drive " the would be instructor tells his pupil before a tracking out shows us they are on a breakdown mechanic.

But these moments are few and far between ;should be reserved for Tino Rossi's fans.
