East West, Home's Best
Based on an operetta by Shostakovich, which makes it resemble a Cliff Richard musical with tunes by Benjamin Britten, in shiny Sovolor rather than Technicolor. It's amazing how homogeneous youth musicals during the early sixties were, whether they came from Mosfilm or Bollywood; although here one of the girls operates a crane.
Whereas Cliff and his chums are in a perpetual state of wanderlust, impatient to free themselves of early sixties Britain and travel the world; here our young heroes' eyes light up, in a nod to the then urgent housing crisis (plus ca change!), at the prospect of one of the nice spacious new flats Khrushchev was then building in Russia's cities.
