Game Face (2017)

Review by davidm-14

Game Face

Offshoot of Face Off, Which Seems to Be one of SyFy's most popular shows

Remix of Face Off, and with the same host. This is more like a game show than a reality competition, with a lot of the same contestants from that show, only they're on for just one episode. The gameplay is 3 rounds, with similar inspirations (plant people, robots, etc).

What i like about Face Off, however, is missing here. My favorite part is watching the artists figure out how to work the inspiration into something impressive and imaginative. Instead, each round is only 90 minutes or so (compressed for TV, of course), and then the loser is quickly shuffled offstage and they immediately start the next round with the remaining artists. I hate watching them dig through already prepared prosthetics. The results often look rushed and with good reason. The critiques almost always include some variation of "i wish you spent more time....", which is going to be true 100% of the time. They were only given 90 minutes, after all.

While Face Off feels like it's at least on the edges of the professional world, and that the winners there go on to (supposedly) something greater (like their own shop or a job on a big movie), this feels like it demeans the profession, making real artists grind something out for no particular reason..
