Build (2004)

Review by Coralknight

Build

3/10

Sometimes a "short" is too short

It goes without saying that many aspiring actor/directors use short films as a medium to highlight and showcase their "talents" and ambitions, which far too often comes at the expense of quality writing or a thought-provoking film. To be fair, "Build" is definitely of this category, in that it seeks to give us a very in-depth character study of 3 key individuals; Crete, his mother, and Garnet. And while this short desperately tries to highlight the acting abilities (range, emotions and willingness to gratuitously do full-frontal) within these three roles (and they are actually good), there is just not enough time or exposition in the writing to give us enough to become vested here. I think it goes without saying that the writer/director/actor, Greg Atkins was hoping this film would inspire interest (and funding) for a future work to turn this into a longer feature, but as a standalone short, it doesn't do or say much, unfortunately.
