Noch ein Seufzer und es wird Nacht (2015)

Noch ein Seufzer und es wird Nacht

9/10

A Seriously Humorous Art Film

I recently saw this short at the Nordic Int'l Film Festival while in New York. It is a wickedly funny film of two odd characters who must make it to Lappland. It is their last opportunity of a job. If they are unable to get there together in time they will lose the last chance of any government financial support and will be forced into retirement. Such dire circumstances make for a forced improbable friendship. Underneath the humor of the film Heikko Deutshmann, the writer/director, laces a serious philosophic commentary on the rationality of governmental social services and of life on the margins. There is a great sense of humanity in the film, supported by some spot-on acting, peppered with wonderful absurdist dialogue.

The film deservedly won "Best Nordic Short" at the festival. Hopefully, this director will continue to make film.
