La Ville dans les nuages (2008)

Review by Prismark10

La Ville dans les nuages

6/10

Reaching the corporate heights

If you love skyscrapers the you would love Vertical City. It is a celebration of tall buildings around the world and not all of them in exotic places.

The Seagram Building in midtown Manhattan is the modern skyscraper much copied elsewhere with its tower block structure and floor to ceiling windows.

The Bank of China Tower is one of the most recognisable buildings in Hong Kong and another designed copied elsewhere as its moved away from the tower blocks held up by columns.

The Beetham Tower in Manchester is a mixed use skyscraper in Manchester with an attached Hilton hotel.

You get to see and admire these buildings, you talk to the people who helped designed it and those who work there or live there. The presenters who themselves have an interest in architecture inform you about the design and why it was so novel at the time.

The presenter might be too interested in the window cleaning rigs, although the views from those rigs are nice. The Beetham Tower episode challenged the views of Prince Charles who is rather anti Modernist and dislikes skyscrapers but the presenter's should acknowledge that in some cases such as the Beetham Tower, the building is at odds with the post industrial revolution surroundings and although striking not elegant or beautiful to look at.
