Traqués dans la nuit (1956)

Review by dbdumonteil

Traqués dans la nuit

Band of gypsies

"Goubbiah, Mon Amour "suffers from an incoherent screenplay and a total lack of chemistry between Jean Marais as Goubbiah and his co-star whose name I forgot and who plays a gypsy called Trinida .Why he wants to marry this vapid virgin is a mystery .

Filmed in color ,which was rather rare in the fifties in France ,Goubbiah is a hotchpotch where characters appear and disappear without bringing anything to the plot : the young fisherman's uncle and aunt who won't eat without the help of their nephew, a treasure (diamonds) which would be hidden somewhere,Goubbiah's father who dies as soon as his son visits him,a site foreman with his wife (who singing "Les Marches Du Palais" in an erotic way ,is almost raped by one of her husband's workers), a big fire and a violent fight,a wealthy man on his boat with his disabled daughter (we don't get to see her) who thinks that the young man is a genius of a sculptor and commissions a statue of Saint Lucie .The lady saint will be grateful and help the lovers when they escape from the band of gypsies .

It is really a painful movie and you wonder why such a talented actor as Jean Marais got involved in that business. His rival,a gypsy called Peppo ,is played by stuntman Gil Delamare .Ten years later ,Delamare was killed while standing in for Jean Marais in "Le Saint Prend L'Affût".
