Sex Machine

Weird but underwhelming

Same team that churned out the white-coater 101 Acts of Love reunited for this crazy house of a porn film. Result is fantasy but not fantastic.

Like its stablemate, it has been "preserved" by Something Weird Video from an execrable print, one of the worst I've seen in ages. Was it worth rescuing from the dumpster to be transferred to VHS and now DVD-R? Hardly, unless you enjoy emulsion damage and splices coming so fast & frequently that Kate Reid in The Andromeda Strain would have an epileptic fit triggered while watching it.

Fortunately for the fans a beautiful print is used by Alpha Blue Archives on its "Sick Doctor" triple feature, running 77 minutes as compared to SWV's hour-long junker. ABA curiously uses a generic retitling of "Let's Play Doctor", erroneously sets the film's date as 1977, and credits direction to Stu Segall (AKA Godfrey Daniels), all mistakes.

Fake Dr. Ann Foster (who gets a fake writing credit again) returns, played listlessly by talking headster Lindis Guinness, to fill us in on the outlandish details of the title sex research project, involving a Rube Goldberg machine that turns out to be nothing more than a dildo mechanically made to go "in & out". Not very futuristic at all, and still the type of device you see in 3-D porn anime/hentai loops on the internet.

Besides the title team there are unscrupulous competing sex researchers doing dirty deeds in this ambitious but infantile porn exercise. Cheri Rostand plays Dr. Alcott hesitantly, and has to suffer through a porn-standard orgy scene where she is whipped and raped - a sequence that seems tacked on to the story proper. Sci-fi fans of such classics as Demon Seed (with Julie Christie) will be disappointed by the plot-goes-nowhere lack of interesting content here.

Debra Christian is impressive as the test subject who meets her downfall overdosing on The Sex Machine, but other popular starlets like Annette Michael and Donna Stanley have most of their footage shredded from the hour-long excerpt-posing-as-feature film. Some hardcore footage is retained in the SWV edition, truncated to just fleeting moments. Fortunately the ABA is intact and fully XXX.
