Rocío Dúrcal in Más bonita que ninguna (1965)

Review by Gblakelii

Más bonita que ninguna

5/10

Good performances, good songs, OK story

If you're a fan of Rocío you may overlook or not even notice the films shortcomings. Others will think it too talky and slow moving. Few will deny the overwhelming talent put into the musical numbers and the good performances given by the entire cast. The plot of this romantic musical comedy has Rocío playing Luisa, a nightclub singer & cigarette girl. Roberto is a wealthy playboy who thinks of her as his best "pal", but has a "serious" romance with another more "worthy"(upper class)woman. Luisa wants of course to be the only woman in his life and thus goes to extremes by disguising herself as her brother, Luisito, and taking a position as Roberto's male secretary so she can spy on him and break off his serious romance. At one point, Luisa as Luisito, even dances with the other woman! Another important character in the film is Fanny(wonderfully played by Gracita Morales)who plays Luisa's co-worker, friend, and comedy sidekick, so to speak. She has some solo song numbers as well as a duet with Rocío which comes off very well. Near the end of the movie, 2 songs in a row are done by Rocío with the 2nd including a big dance number in classic Flamenco garb with Luisa dressed as a toreador. Here she displays her abundant vocal abilities to best effect. Of trivial interest is an outdoor scene showcasing some camels and an indoor scene in which Luisa puts the spotlight on the fine art of origami. The movie reviewed was in the VHS format and had excellent color and picture/sound quality.
