Flash Gordon (1996)

Review by mickdansforth

Flash Gordon

8/10

Younger Hover Board version, but still good.

The Filmation version of Flash Gordon brought me untold joy for many years. And by far, the best version of Flash Gordon, save the comic strips.

Then in 1996 we are given a new take on Flash Gordon. At first I was terrified. In a move often seen, someone decided that Flash Gordon, as well as most of the cast, except Zarkov and Ming, are Teenagers. And everyone rides Hover Boards.

As the story developed, it became obvious that people behind the scenes had much love for the source material and tried hard to create a good show. The stories did involve most of the major elements of the strip and Filmation series. The same elements lacking in the 50's Live Action TV series, and the (depressing) 70's Citadel book series.

To the best of my memory, this 1996 series only went one season (13 episodes).

To date there has only been one VHS and one DVD release for this series. Both cover 2-4 episodes. Hopefully with the Success of BCI/Ink & Paint's DVD sets of the New Adventures of Flash Gordon, Defenders of the Earth, and Prince Valiant box sets, they will also release complete sets of Flash Gordon 1996, Phantom 2040, and Flash Gordon 1954.
