Captain Scarlet vs. the Mysterons (1980)

Review by peter-faizey

Captain Scarlet vs. the Mysterons

7/10

Good, but hindered by stupid looking lasers!

This is another movie produced by ITC's New York offices in 1981 comprising several episodes of Captain Scarlet into a movie. This movie is less faithful to the original material than the previous ITC New York produced 'Revenge of the Mysteron's from Mars', and it has some annoying moments. Firstly the final episode used, 'Attack On Cloudbase' is interrupted by annoyingly hideous red lasers added by Dolphin Productions to replace the original and much better looking missiles. There is also an additional scene added featuring a horrible video pyramid, making out that the attack on cloudbase was not a dream but actually happened, changing the final plot point to the episode. The Mysteron voice speaking in this additional scene has an American accent that doesn't fit with the other material which has Mysteron voices by Donald Gray, who had a very strong English accent. Another problem is the producer's insistence on adding lots of music. This is fine in principal, but in this film music is added at every quite moment, and sometimes at the same time as the original soundtrack. This means that you have one incidental score which sounds completely different from the other, being played at the same time, on top of one another! As a representation of the series this movie is OK, but if your a fan of Captain Scarlet beware! Parts of this movie will drive you to insanity!
