Darya Mikhaylova in Valentina (1981)

Review by plechist

Valentina

10/10

A touching story with great acting and well-written characters

Valentina is a hidden gem from the Soviet film scene of 1982 that blends drama and a touch of romance in a uniquely captivating way. The story revolves around its titular character, Valentina, who lives in a small siberian village and navigates the complexities of life and love in a small society rife with many challenges. The cinematography beautifully captures the mood of the era, and the performanceses from every single character are genuinely heartfelt and immersive.

What I love most about this film is its ability to convey deep emotions without falling into melodrama. The pacing might feel a bit slow for modern audiences, but there's a certain charm in its subtle storytelling that allows you to soak in the atmosphere.

Overall, Valentina may not be as well-known as some other Soviet classics, but it's definitely worth a watch if you're into thought-provoking cinema with great character writing and that manages capture the essence of a bygone era. It's a sweet, poignant ride that leaves you thinking long after the credits roll!
