Peter Capaldi in Un amour absolu (2003)

Review by wellthatswhatithinkanyway

Un amour absolu

Sufficently credible TV thriller

STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs

Another spin on the time-tested thriller formula of ransom-and-demand,this film is not unsimilar to the Michael Douglas thriller Don't Say a Word.In both movies, the kidnapping party does not want money-but a favour of some sort. However, despite it's lack of Hollywood gloss and glamour,Unconditional Love emerges triumphant as the better movie. It's got a far more credible and compelling story, which is also full of riveting and unexpected twists-and-turns.The performances from the leads,Robson Green,Sarah Parish and Joe Absolom, are all fine. The dialogue doesn't particularly knock you out,but in a weird way, this only really adds to the dramatic intensity of the story, making you able to connect to the characters more as real people with the presented situation unfolding before them, and not just concocted heroes designed to fit the story.Admittently,it's probably a little overlong with a few pointless sub-plots,and Ferdenand Fairfax's direction is slightly wavey, but overall, this is a very brave and original endeaveur for a TV movie, and is well worth a couple of hours of your time.***
