This movie in the early era of the reform was a brave pioneer in touching something most would not dare to venture into: Criticize the disastrous Cultural Revolution launched by Mao, in which political loyalty is the only thing to judge whether a person is guilty or not, and the only action considered to be loyal is to be absolutely obedient. Any criticism to the movement is considered criminal and many innocent and good people were jailed and persecuted. This movie is one of the first of the introspection on the Cultural Revolution and its aftermath.
