Yuriy Solomin in Skandalnoye proishestviye v Brikmille (1981)

Review by hmsgroop

Skandalnoye proishestviye v Brikmille

10/10

What is this life, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

The film is based on the well-known play by J.B.Priestley. The plot boils down to the fact that a prosperous man suddenly decides to stay at home and to do what he likes. Instead of going to his office he spends a happy day playing toy trains, tin soldiers, firing toy rifle and enjoying himself. Innocent, isn't it? But (and that's the rub) all the others are not satisfied. They demand that he should return to work, send "ambassadors" to talk him out of this "folly", and, finally, send for a psychiatric ward brigade. Only one person joins him in his revolt against the silly claims of society on a person's private time, on his life, in fact. The society won't let a person do what he likes, it's like a monster sucking out our lives day by day, drop by drop. The rebel gets the upper hand, finally, but only by escaping from his house and quitting his past life. I must add that Yuri Solomin does his part (the leading one) marvellously.
