Sairaan kaunis maailma (1997)

Review by selfubam

Sairaan kaunis maailma

9/10

Freaking Beautiful World

Ipe and Papu are two messed-up 14-year olds from Helsinki. They work as small time LSD-dealers for a local drug lord, but the problem is that they boys seem to be using more than selling. Kalle gives them a last chance to pay him back by smuggling some drugs from Sweden. When the movie was first released it became as quite a shock to many, as it deals with juvenile narcotic use, a big taboo in Finland, as well as all other cultures. Ippe's mother is played by Kati Outinen, who later on won the best actress award in Cannes (for A Man Without a Past (2002)). It's a very realistic portrayal of a small Finnish subculture and for sure one of those movies that people will watch in the future when they want to learn about Finnish life in the late 90's.
