  • What a dreary little movie

A movie made for, and by, Generation Z.

A movie with no soul, no feeling, no grasp of movie making, no ability to make the viewer care about any of the characters.

I won't go into the dreadful little plot which seems to have been written around a pub game and a desire to reintroduce the serial killer trope in movies.

Lucy Hale after being deemed unsuitable for marriage ( I wonder why?) begins to arrange vapid, soulless, meaningless sex with strangers to get over the fact that she is not the marrying kind. Again, I wonder why?

Speaking of Lucy Hale, she does seem to be in a lot of these cheap, z list movies these days. Is that all she is capable of?

  • Strange little movie .... No pun intended.

A tale of WW1, Italy, dwarves, prostitution, exploitation, desperation and betrayal.

Its strangeness comes from its melancholic nature. Everyone is sad, lonely, disabled with no hopes or aspirations. Even the ending a barely a happy one.

I gather that there is a longer 99 minute uncensored version but I saw the censored 93 minute cut that had nothing that wasn't in keeping with the story and subject matter.

    Possibly worth a watch.

  • For 1971 this was quite unique

Firstly, take the feminist revenge aspect of the story. A few years later and 'I Spit On Your Grave', would copy this basic concept to a much more graphic effect.

Secondly, this was an American take on a spaghetti western. Filmed in Spain, like the Clint Eastwood movies of the sixties and seventies.

The rest of the movie is basic fare but all done quite well considering the age it was made.

Raquel Welch is gorgeous and the rest of the cast, Robert Culp, Ernest Borgnine, Christopher Lee and Stephen Boyd are quite stellar. It's OK but nothing special.

  • If you like your rom coms without either romance or comedy....look no further.

So this is what romance is in the 21st century? In New York? For women?

There are things to like about this movie. The cinematography, some of the acting....and that's it.

This is a chick flick. The male two dimensional characters have no testosterone and are merely there to hold the female gaze and will their fantasies into celluloid.

    The caveman opening was cringeworthy.

Are we to believe that a multi millionaire Pedro Pascal ( why is he in everything at the moment) has no other romantic options than chasing Dakota Johnson? The same for Chris Evan's, would he really hang around on the off chance that she became available.

None of the characters are particularly sympathetic. Indeed Dakota Johnson is shown to be a five star golddigger, and makes ridiculous choices throughout.

    Very, very meh.

  • What happens when the budget goes on the 2 stars and not on lighting

I hate giving one star reviews, I do, but this had no redeeming features.

    An unfathomable plot.

    Terrible lighting.

    No set up.

    No character development.

Dreadfully slow pace in the editing that was supposed to be an action film.

    Amateurish direction.

No grasp of the science in science fiction.

This is such a weak effort as grown up sci fi is my favourite genre......Bladerunner, Arrival, etc.

    Avoid, avoid, avoid.

  • Excellent story, well told but with some issues

This is adapted from the Danish original book and movie, both of which are excellent, and transported to Scotland for some reason.

Matthew Goode is superb as ever and is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast including Kate Dickie.

The direction, character development and storytelling are all fantastic but there are some issues.

Firstly, Scotland has a white population of 97%, but you would never guess it from watching this. Secondly, the 'modern audiences' to which this is aimed at becomes far too preachy at times with boss babes aplenty and even a scene where a man is told to shut up and let the lady speak multiple times. Very tiresome.

Overall worth a watch and I hope they make another.

  • Excellent first that falls apart in the last act. Kill is kiss?

I feel bad about writing this review. I love a low budget horror with unique takes like this but Pontypool runs out of good ideas at the end.

The first hour is great. The characters are assembled, the personalities defined, the direction, lighting and editing are good. The reports from the 'event' and the gathering of the 'infected' are scary. We have all the classic hallmarks of a zombie horror, isolation, desperation, confusion and confinement.

Then a plot device literally jumps in through a window and later, jumps out of it again. The character of Mendez is stupid. No one knows who he is but they trust him immediately. I won't go into the 'Kill is kiss' gibberish, but the last act really falls off a cliff in terms of coherence and execution. Worth a look though.

  • A thoughtful, stripped down telling of the Odyssey

All right, so it is not really the Odyssey, that would take far too long to tell. Instead, what Pasolini gives us is a stripped down, grimy and dirty version of the return of Odysseus to Ithaca after the Trojan War.

The story and direction are good, the acting is mostly excellent....what do you expect with with Fiennes and Bonoche. The costumes are basic and the film, as a whole, is a success.

The directorial styles is quite languid and can make the film seem 'boring' to the casual cinephile who may want more swords, sex and sandals. But the film seems to portray Odysseus as a sufferer of PTSD rather than a plaything of the gods.

    Worth a watch.

  • A little 'by the numbers' for my taste.

Lots to like about the conventional film told in an unconventional way. However, lots to dislike as well.

The film runs through almost every Hollywood relationship cliche ever. Without giving away the exact spoilers, the movie copies the homework of.- Terms of Endearment.

Meet Joe Black Chef Private Life.......i could go on.

    Feels quite cheap and manipulative.

The characters of Pugh and Garfield are also poor. She can't do anything wrong and he plays the world's biggest low T soy boy.

And because the movie only concentrates on the important bits, it's is very plot driven and not character driven. Toward the end I was was getting bored just wanting the plot to finish.

That being said, apart from feeling totally unoriginal, it was a total chick flick that knew its audience. Non cinema literate women.

  • Watchable and enjoyable Clooney/Pitt romp

Finally got around to watching this after it was released on Apple to virtually no fanfare. Glad that I did .

The movie relies on the Pitt Clooney characters fizzing and bouncing off each other, which they have done before in movies like the Oceans franchise.

The movie does everything well. The direction, editing, acting are all very competent but the real star is the script and the plot that gradually develops and keeps everything whizzing along nicely with plenty of action and humorous quips.

These are the kind of movies that Hollywood used to make. One offs, not franchises of childish comic book heroes.

    Old man shouts at clouds.

  • Well made, interesting, yet cold, overlong and mean spirited

My instantaneous reaction to the movie was how preachy and elitist in tone the whole thing felt. As if the whole point was to make people feel that there is no point to having children.

The film is certainly unique, and that is to be commended, however, none of the characters are particularly likeable and the story feels like propaganda.

The acting is rather good, the setting is bleak and unforgiving, the house used for filming is minimalist and functional with no 'soul'.

The manipulations of Alicia Vikanders character are at times ridiculous, in others interesting. The viewer never knows what is part of the assessment or part of the manipulations of an individual.

Interesting yet a little long, cold and not a movie a sane person could love.

  • A 'comedy' with no laughs. A drama with no point.

In whose world is this supposed to be entertainment?

Are all the characters supposed to be either gay or lesbian?

Why are there so many 10 star bot reviews from reviewers that have only ever reviewed this?

There are so many issues with this Apple TV show.

    The premise is silly.

There are no laughs in its runtime.

There is no real story or plot.

There are no real characters with recognisable character traits of any human that I have ever met.

It borrows the idea of large earwigs coming up out of the desert sand straight out of Dune.

The CgI is poor. The short episodes don't allow any dramatic development.

What a terrible waste of Saarsgard and Dalmatian.

  • Straight to Netflix = straight to DVD

Dreadful, generic, vapid, vacuous, poorly written, no character development. I could go on.

But let's start with the obvious problems. The first time feature director, Victoria Mahoney, is woefully out of her depth. The whole thing feels like a long, boring episode of TV.

The fight scenes are ridiculous. More an example of combat themed interpretive dance.

The script and story are terrible. Sarah Walker boss babes too close to the sun.

All the males characters are relegated to bit part players.

Back in the day, when a movie was deemed too awful for cinema release it was sharted out on DVD. And that's where this should would have gone. But these days Netflix buy up any old garbage to keep people entertained.

    Avoid.

  • Interesting take on the reporting of a serial killer

This movie borrows its inspiration from the David Fincher movie Zodiac which operates in the same style of journalists hunting a serial killer in the 60s and 70s with a muted colour palette.

The writing and directing isn't of the same prowess as that movie but what it does is throw a different light on the story of deSalvo being the only killer. And for that, this has to be applauded.

The cast is excellent, the sets and 'feel' of the movie are very good and plaudits need to be given to Knightly, Cooper and Carrie Coon.

The film never dwells on the more lurid aspects of the crimes and left me wanting to read more on the subject.

    Definitely worth a watch.

  • Silly plot contrivances and very derivative of Lost

A mystery boxTV show just like Lost.

Season 1 - 7/10 good set up, quite scary, decent character development Season 2 - 5/10 just lots of talking, much less reliant on the horror element of the story and many characters suddenly become completely different to how they were in season 1. The actors who play Kenny and Ellis are terrible. No ability to deliver a line. Donna becomes insufferable and probably one of 'them'.

Season 3 - 4/10 plot conveniences become a problem. The man trap, the car accident, etc.

The writers have got cart Blanche to do anything they want as they have never explained the rules and we are no closer to knowing them.

    Watch season one, then bale.

  • A disappointing mash up of Twilight, Harry Potter, etc.

    Vampires v witches v demons.

Season 1 is quite good setting up 2 of the 3 factions quite well. Demons are not explained at all. Oxford looks lovely, and th3 action is fairly well paced although the chemistry/relationship between the 2 leads is rushed and comes out of nowhere and characters seem to teleport all over the place, Oxford, Venice, France, Scotland, etc.

Season 2 starts to drag. Time travel rarely works in anything.

That's when I bailed. I may revisit later but based on other reviews here, I wouldn't guarantee it.

There are too many questions I have about 5he world building. Demons make witches?

  • Solid, watchable but unspectacular

Periodically, there are many movies made that throw a spotlight on the somewhat grotesque underbelly of the adult movie industry. Amanda Seyfreid did well with her rendition of Lovelace and Sofia Kappel was great in the recent 'Pleasue'.

Natalia Germani is excellent as Andrea Absolonova, an Olympic diver retired on health grounds and turned to the 'adult' industry.

The script seems rather squeamish on showing any real emotional torment of entering 'the business' and indeed avoids the real ending of Absolonova's life completely.

Whilst fairly engaging, I couldn't help but feel nonplussed at the ending.

  • Vaguely interesting but with terrible execution

As the great Chris Rock said in a stand up routine many years ago, ' ..you are free to steer a car using your feet, it doesn't mean to say that it's a good idea.' Why iambic pentameter? What could it possibly add? If anything, this production decision leaves the whole film feeling, cold, sterile, unlikeable and unwatchable.

None of the characters are particularly sympathetic.

The direction is somewhat amateurish. The overuse of the Dutch tilt is annoying.

The editing is poor, the slow motion scenes serve no purpose.

In short the whole production is somewhat ' more art than substance'.

It may have sounded good on paper, but this is a boring let down.

Obviously, Star Wars came out in 1977 to massive acclaim and greenlit a whorde of similar movie like this, Battle Beyond The Stars, The Black Hole and the revamped Star Trek movies.

This is a very cheap looking movie, that is badly made, badly acted and completely unoriginal in every way.

Richard Kiel in the lead role? What were they thinking? Best known as the the henchman Jaws in the Bond movies, he is a terrible actor.

The costumes are a total ripoff of Star Wars. The big baddie looks almost identical to Darth Vader.

The story is pointless. Star Wars is rewatchable even today. This is not.

  • Great script and acting but rather sterile direction and cheap production

Quite the mixed bag with this. I came across it whilst hunting out the brilliant but terribly flawed recent movie 'Conclave'.

The production is somewhat cheap. The CGI and the sets are poor, as are the lighting and direction.

As good as the script and most of the acting is, the big problem with the film is that it lacks gravitas. The ending, for example, is quite anti climatic. Where was the drama? The build up was there, kind of, but the payoff was sadly lacking.

And all this was shame because, other than that, it had me hooked. Why choose this conclave? I am sure some other must have had some murder, mayhem and intrigue.

I am stunned how badly written this nonsense is.

Bella Ramsey is terrible as the main character who thoroughly unlikeable.

There are so many childish moments when she has to restrained from succumbing to her childish anger issues.

An episode full of conveniences and contrivances. About to be hanged but, wait, oops, here comes a a convenience.

    Full of terrible childish dialogue.

An awful ending that I simply don't care about.

  • IMO a better than average Statham action movie

You know what you are going to get with a movie starring Jason Statham. Family, fight scenes, honour, the underdog, a happy ending and lots of guns and shootouts.

The plot is inconsequential on so many levels yet this one is rather enthralling.

The bad guys are Russians this time and are all play with menace and ridiculousness in equal measure.

The movie leaves itself open for a sequel and that might be rather welcome.

David Ayer does a good job of directing action movies anyway but this is really good. The cinematography is excellent. And the screenplay may have old Bill Shakespeare turning in his grave but it gets the job done.

Sit back, don't question it and enjoy the ride.

  • Trust an old master to make a solid, masterful movie

Juror no2 is a courtroom drama that is wonderfully written and skilfully acted by an accomplished ensemble cast.

At first, I thought that this would simply be a '12 Angry Men' copy. I was a long way from the mark. In fact, if the movie has any faults, it is that that it didn't lean into the jury room drama as much as I thought.

The direction by Eastwood, is sparse but effective. The real star, however, is the writing that has your sympathies twisting one way and then the other, and developing the characters that are horrific at the beginning and yet change into being quite likeable in the end.

This is a movie that Hollywood used to make. Shame on them that they don't anymore.

    I mean that.

Right up there with The Wire, The Sopranos and the first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones or the first three of 'Lost'.

    Every episode is a banger.

The acting is perfect. The direction sublime. The mixing of action, drama and humour together with fully rounded characters reminds me a lot of an Australian Tarantino venture.

The film centres around violence, the causes of violence and the ramifications of a man who has slipped through the cracks of society and ends up as a gun\muscle for hire in the Sydney underworld.

It is profoundly sad and disappointing that Scott Ryan the lead actor and writer has done nothing since.

  • What, no silver bullets?

Some things to like and some things to make you go.....meh.

This is supposed to be a new take on the werewolf genre, probably made to keep the rights which are going to run out shortly.

In this there are no wolves and no silver bullets. Instead we get an infected bloke who looks like a run of the mill zombie. Poor creature design.

I liked the father daughter relationship theme and the 'wolf' perspective shots. Chris Abbott in the title role is pretty good as well but Julia Garner is cold, uninspired and unlikeable.

The action is quite slow and you can argue what is the symbolism of the mother killing the husband, or the child preferring the father to the mother, or the father killing the father, or 'like father like son' until the cows come home.

    Watchable but flawed.
