The set up is a bit like Stand By Me, but gradually builds up like a classic horror throwback. You might get vibes of a psychedelic cross between Lost Boys and Stranger Things. You might even feel hints of some popular anime or manga mixing in. Most interesting though is that it might just resemble an even more twisted complex version of the classic story, Hansel and Gretal. Though I may have simplified the description, the atmosphere and plot are starkingly similar to those movies. However it isn't all about horror as plenty of mystery elements and bits of angst, understanding others, and growing up even out the overall experience. It's certainly worth watching and if you like this type of movie, then it's also worth buying.

If you have seen The Goonies and The Sandlot you will feel the vibes on this one especially from the beginning even with or without the Umpire played by Patrick Renna from The Sandlot . This was a good watch on a rainy late afternoon here in Great Britain whilst having supper. This is definitely a watch for the family but not sure on kids under a certain age as has one or two wee parts that might scare a minor or three.
A mysterious force disrupts Noah and his friends' summer fun. They team up with a retired police detective to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their island.
Worth a watch i say.

I was surprised with some of the really negative reviews and remarks of, 'for kids only'.
I viewed the trailer for this movie and I wasn't sure if it was a horror flick or a "scary" kids movie. I really appreciate Mel Gibson's work and I love horror flicks.
I never watched Sandlot, but I know the guy in it is the ref in Monster Summer. I kept thinking, it's similar to Sandlot, only because he's in it.
I would say this movie gave me vibes of Monster Squad and Stranger Things. I didn't think of it, but a few mention Goonies (and I agree).
This movie also reminded me of the Mel Gibson flick where he's a burned victim and befriends a younger boy (The Man Without a Face). A great movie that showcases a heartwarming and unexpected friendship with no age boundaries.
Monster Squad has evil, but it was a fun flick with meaning. Monster Summer has evil, kids have died (but in the past and this is not shown). Yet it has an inspiring creative lead young boy. Who has a strong friendship with a talented young athlete. There's jokes, creativity, kids being kids, and kids experiencing something scary and acting like a type of zombie afterwards. The adults totally miss what's actually going on, except Mel Gibson's character. His character is very interesting. The lead young writer teams up to find and stop whoever is doing bad things to these children.
I enjoyed it!

Monster Summer is a nostalgic throwback to the classic horror films of the 90s, blending coming-of-age drama with supernatural thrills. Director David Henrie masterfully captures the essence of a summer gone wrong, injecting a healthy dose of creature feature fun.
The film follows Noah and his friends as they navigate the challenges of adolescence while confronting a monstrous threat lurking beneath the surface of their idyllic island paradise. Mel Gibson delivers a solid performance as the grizzled detective who guides the young protagonists on their perilous journey. The young actors, Mason Thames and Julian Lerner, bring energy and authenticity to their roles, making their characters both relatable and endearing.
While the plot may not break new ground, if I were a teenager in the 90s and early 2000's, Monster Summer would have been an instant classic. It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane for older viewers and a thrilling introduction to horror for a new generation.

The Plot:
When a mysterious force begins to disrupt their big summer fun, Noah and his friends team up with a retired police detective to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their island.
I didnt know what to expect when I streamed this movie. Turns out it's pretty good. It sort of has a Goonies/Disney vibe about it. With Mel Gibson thrown in for measure.
The story is actually interesting and the kids in the movie (except for the annoying girl) are effective. Plot keeps moving and it was great to see Mel. He's really underutilized these days, but at age 68 I think he can still pull off a leading role or an action movie. And that's saying something.

Mel Gibson and Mason Thames deliver the best acting performances. However, this does play out like a long episode of the 90s hit show and books Goosebumps. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, the movie just has its weaknesses. Adults can enjoy this movie but they will see the flaws in the writing and some of the supporting casts acting. But it seems the target audience is probably middle school and elementary school. That's totally fine. The movie has a great twist and is scary enough for that age group. If your preteen is looking for there first Halloween themed movie, this is a great one to start with.

I think it's hard to give this movie a fair rating since I'm not the target audience and it's clearly aimed at younger people. That being said, the movie should still be able to entertain adults, and I found it to be rather entertaining. The plot is pretty simple, and this premise has been done before. However, the addition of Mel Gibson as the retired police detective was great, he was probably my favorite part of the movie.
There were plenty of stereotypes and many well-known tropes, which I personally found a bit tiring. However, for younger viewers, it could definitely work. The actors delivered overall solid performances, and the cast was actually quite stacked, even featuring Kevin James. It was also nice to see Mason Thames, the young boy from The Black Phone, as a lead character again, he did a solid job.
Overall, I'd say the movie is decent but nothing out of the ordinary, which might cause it to get lost in the sea of movies being released nowadays. [5.2/10]

I found this movie to be a little confusing. In some ways it tried to be a kids movie and in other ways it seemed to try for more. It was just okay. I think if they had left out one particular scene then it could've been a PG kids movie (which i would've still wanted to see) and it would've had a better/bigger audience. But I'm not sure that would've been successful since it lacked magic. I liked the idea of the plot but it felt a little disjointed and whoever wrote the dialogue for the kids really failed. But overall I don't regret watching though since it's October and I appreciate a little spooky during this season. It's decent entertainment if you lower your expectations.

As much as I'm a fan of good witches like Sabrina or the sisters from Charmed, sometimes it's nice to have a witch just be evil. I also like that this movie takes itself seriously. There is some light jokes but it doesn't take away from the danger they are facing.
While the pacing could be better, the story was well written and acted, particularly Mason Thames, who plays the main guy, and Mel Gibson. The characters feel believable and they get some development and a few heartfelt moments. One might compare it to Are You Afraid Of The Dark? In that way. The ending was fun and wrapped things up nicely.

Mel Gibson is a great actor and Director. There, I said it.
This was a confusing film. It wanted to be a Goonies, then a Hocus Pocus and then a Jaws and then a Silence of the Lambs. It had such a mixed tone.
I liked the cast. Most were interesting and acted well. The feel of the movie was good. And some scenes were creepy. The old woman jumping in the sea was a nice touch.
But it developed in a messy way. The story became loose and didn't really know where to go. It then started to get a little silly, with the dumbing down soon kicking in to help the plot. Finishing in such a ridiculous and violent way, leaving ten zillion unanswered questions.
I would recommend it but I don't know who to. Definitely not my kids. But crime enthusiast don't want a Witch story. So it just remains in the middle of nowhere, hoping more fake reviews boost its rating.
Did I mention that Mel Gibson is a great actor!?

Greetings again from the darkness. A fun-filled film meant only to entertain is always welcome. Traditionally these show up during the summer months, but timing this one closer to Halloween makes complete sense. Written by Bryan Schulz (the grandson of the late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz) and Cornelius Uliano (his collaborator on THE PEANUTS MOVIE, 2015), the film is directed by David Henrie, best known for his role in "How I Met Your Mother". It's his first feature film gaining distribution, and it doesn't disappoint.
It's 1997 on Martha's Vineyard (although it's filmed in Southport, North Carolina) and budding journalist Noah (Mason Thames, THE BLACK PHONE, 2021) is desperately trying to follow in his recently deceased father's footsteps. However, the local newspaper editor (Kevin James) wants nothing to do with the kid's ideas. Noah suspects an evil presence in town at just about the same time Miss Halverson (Lorraine Bracco, "The Sopranos") arrives for an extended stay at the B&B run by Noah's mother (Nora Zehetner, BRICK, 2005).
Not to give anything away, but witchy things start happening. Noah's baseball teammate Ben (Noah Cottrell) is night-swimming with a lady friend (Lilah Pate), and a fright leaves him "with the lights on and no one home" (as it's described). It's summertime, so baseball is a recurring theme for Noah and his friends Eugene (Julian Lerner, the new "The Wonder Years") and Sammy (Abby James Witherspoon), with familiar face Patrick Renna (THE SANDLOT) as the league umpire. The three friends begin their own investigation, but soon enough, Noah is on his own ... at least until he joins forces with retired detective Gene (2-time Oscar winner Mel Gibson). Gene has long been the subject of local rumors and mostly keeps to himself; but Noah's work piques his interest, and the two share a form of grief.
Bits and pieces of IT (2017), THE GOONIES (1995), and more recently, "Stranger Things" all play a role, and we have references to Mulder and Scully from "The X-Files", as well as a nostalgic feel that gives this more the feel of a childhood adventure than a true horror story. However, the creep factor is strong enough to earn the PG-13 rating. It should also be noted that Mel Gibson has been 'canceled' in some circles, yet he brings the necessary gravitas to elevate the film. It also seems safe to predict that young Mason Thames has a nice acting career ahead of him. Stories revolving around neighborhood legends and myths are quite common, and this one chooses to blend the supernatural with local police cases. So, if you are up for some cinematic fun times around Halloween, director David Henrie is all about treats, not tricks.
Opening in theaters on October 4, 2024.

No pun intended - Mel Gibson is back ... well at least movie wise. I am not sure if the limping is or rather was only written or a thing with him now. Would be a shame if he'd be the one too old for that ... stuff - being Lethal Weapon! Come on, we can have one more can't we? Well his political and personal issues aside of course. I do not condone any of that.
And he has quite a lot of fun with the movie. While he is only the mentor, he also seems to be stealing the whole movie. Not sure if his lines were all written like that - but it feels like he did a lot of ad lib ... they really do work.
This is aimed at kids - but has tons of references to older movies ... be it Night of the living dead, Jaws and so many other things ... that teenagers might not really get! Even X-Files is being mentioned/name dropped.
The story and the movie was surprisingly entertaining - not Goonies, but it was still decent overall. It does leave way too much open (like a girl crush who is almost treated like a pawn) .. then you also have the ending ... way too dramatic ... not the Mel Gibson one, that is handled with really good care, but the one before that ... a bit of kitsch if you wanna call it that ... on the other hand I don't entirely get baseball and its rules anyway so there is that - the mother seems to forgiving too ... but again try not to get hung up on the negatives and enjoy the fun you can have ...

I went into this movie knowing nothing about it, which usually enhances the experience when you don't know what to expect. Unfortunately, Monster Summer doesn't really have anything to expect or not expect. There just isn't much here. It's the most basic story possible with the most basic setup and resolution.
It does a bad job of hooking you and keeping you engaged. I didn't care about the characters or their outcomes. There is nothing that stands out or is memorable in any way. The musical score is solid but every other aspect is subpar, mediocre and forgettable.
I could see some very young and inexperienced viewers enjoying this movie. For genre fans, this barely qualifies as horror.

This is a movie I had never heard of before, until I found out it was directed by David Henrie, who I know as Justin Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place (2007-2012). So, I gave this movie a watch and it was okay, while also be a little disappointed by the result.
Positives for Monster Summer (2024): This movie feels like a throwback to older family-friendly horror movies like The Monster Squad (1987) and I can see people getting some entertainment value from this. This movie isn't trying to be thought-provoking or any of that modern day movie stuff, it just trying to entertain you and I appreciate that. I liked the performances from Mason Thames and Mel Gibson. And finally, there is some solid horror moments in the finale of the movie.
Negatives for Monster Summer (2024): While I do appreciate the attempt to making this movie feel like older family-friendly horror movies, the attempt doesn't work here. For the most part, this movie consists of scene with characters talking to each other and there's barely any horror in this movie. I would be forgiving of this if the conversations in this movie were good, but they aren't and they feel rather very dull. Some of that is probably because of the small budget and it most definitely shows here. I was expecting the scariest movie here, but I'm a little disappointed given that David Henrie was the director.
Overall, Monster Summer (2024) is an okay family-friendly horror movie that you can throw on and have some fun with the family. Sadly, this movie was a big disappointment for me and given David Henrie's background in family-comedy and Disney Channel, I was expecting so much more from this movie.

I am always intrigued when I watch the credits at the end of a movie like this, particularly when the writers are mentioned. I always wonder if those people actually think they have written something new, different and innovative when, in fact, the movie is full of tropes and stereotypes that have turned up in many, often better, movies in the past. That's the case here. All I can say is Mel Gibson must really need the money. Lorraine Bracco's participation is a completely unnecessary as her character is completely unnecessary and has zilch to do with the plot and doesn't appear much anyway.
Look, I don't want to be completely negative about this. I think that tweens and young teens will probably find it riveting, so long as their parents are happy to let them watch it (it does get gruesome at times). Adults who have seen all this done before and can tell when they're being emotionally manipulated ( as this movie often tries to do) will find it all a bit of a yawn.
One final note about Mason Thames, the young protagonist: movies like this are fine to learn the basics and hone your acting chops, but if he doesn't start getting roles in better movies than this, his career is going to be a short one and that would be sad.

This movie had all of the hallmarks of a really good teens-coming-of-age movie, with a nice dose of mystery and suspense to it, but... they kind of dropped the ball on it, and dropped it pretty far and pretty hard. One of the bigger drops was Mel Gibson's character. Mel acted the character well - Mel Gibson is as Mel Gibson does - but the script he was given to act was just... meh. His character was more of a cardboard cutout of an adult/mentor figure, than any kind of really believable one. The character felt stilted to the point that it was more cringe-worthy than anything approaching relatable.
Then there was the payout of the mystery, when the audience gets to learn what all the hub bub of the story is about. That was dropped so hard, it hit bottom with a resounding thud.
Still, all in all, though, the actors all gave very good to passable performances, which is what got this movie a six from me. But the material they were given to work with, is what is definitely kept me from giving it anything higher. Good but not great. Poor but not horrible. Just meh. Which is a real shame, because with the acting talent they had, they could have had something probably pretty great.

There is nothing redeeming about this absolute SWILL! After I finished the movie I felt as if I had aged 10 years, the only way to describe the movie would be the worst Goosebumps ever written and multiply that by 100. This was a huge strike out for David Henrie and Bryan Schulz. The movie felt very much like it was written by a first year film student, but then again what can you expect from a child director whose life experience consists of the Disney Channel and a writer who gave us the worst Peanuts movie of all time. One main issue I had with the movie, was that there were far too many heart to heart scenes that were unnatural with the worst being a grown man sharing one of those moments with a child in a dark and creepy home. Yeah that's not weird. Another issue I had with the story line was the lack luster villain. Each time the heroes are being pursued by this villain, the chase abruptly ends with no result to this action and the next scene starts. The whole story line was very sloppy and uneven. Also, a very annoying part of the movie was Kevin James and his faux southern accent that does not belong to any know region in America. This strange dialect of the character was incredibly unnecessary and it did not fit in a story that is set in Northeast region of the States. To add to the list of reasons why this movie is one of the worst films of 2024, was that there were far too many buildups to intense and frightening scenes, but then nothing would happen and the scene would progress as if the villain was nowhere in sight. Many of the scenes in the movie are underdeveloped and a waste of time with absolutely nothing to do with the story, including the little sister who was focused on for a brief moment and then forgotten about, and the best friend who seemed to be a target but than hardly saw any danger. This train wreck was just a contrived and ham fisted reimagining of the fairytale Hansel and Gretel. I could not imagine any teenager being entertained by this mess, I would doubt that even an elementary aged audience would either. The only age group that this movie would frighten would be preschool children, but than again this movie still wouldn't be suitable as the language was too harsh. Lastly, David Henrie and Bryan Schulz need to decide whether their movies are going to be for adults or children and make movies suitable to that audience.

Monster Summer is like The Sandlot kids taking on the supernatural. It serves as a great introduction to horror films (and Mel Gibson) for kids and preteens.
Even if the story is familiar, I really enjoyed it. It isn't made for someone my age, but the writing and direction feels very Spielbergian. The characters are way above average for a family movie.
Also, there's a twist I can't believe I didn't see coming. If I were a kid, I would've called it one of my favorite movies because I always found Are You Afraid of the Dark? And Goosebumps to be lacking the bite that this movie has.
Spooky season popcorn fun for all.

Child detectives who are never taken seriously by the adults have to solve the mystery of someone or something stealing the souls of children. With the help of an old cop, they crack the case. You've seen this all before and, I have to admit, the movie was not completely bad. The problem is that it wasn't very good either. It brought nothing new to the table of childish Goosebumps-style movie. It felt cardboard.
Mason Thames did a good job as the lead, as he did in The Black Phone. I think he has a bright career ahead if he doesn't let it go to his head. My old heart hurts to see Mel Gibson and Lorraine Bracco reduced to support actors in films like this, but that's showbiz.
Bottom line: I have no reason to recommend it to anyone. It felt like one of those films you used to turn on the TV on while you were doing something else, knowing exactly how it would go and how it would end. A level above Scooby Doo, though.

Someone said this movie was like the 90's again. As someone who grew up in the 90's it was nothing like it. Should have been more of a sandlot remake instead of the dumb subject of witches. Mel Gibson looks good with age i will say that. I liked him and his role, that was it. This film felt totally 2024 not 1995. Boys did not hug in the 90's. And none of them looked like girls. If you buddy told you something you believed him. It was predictable. The kids were really annoying. Do not waste your money. I did like the cars of course though, but i do miss old cars. It was nice seeing the Great Hambino. And i liked it when Mel said the witch was ding don.

This movie is a bit all over the place with respect to the actors and story. It's definitely not a bad movie, per se, but confusing to really pin down.
It has a few heavy hitter actors for no real reason, in my opinion. It's nice to see them, but they feel out of place in an otherwise mediocre to poor acting pool that this movie contains.
The story is fine if not a bit childish, and that's where more confusion sets in. In some ways it feels like a serious crime drama, but pulled down by otherwise childish tropes. It actually reminds me a lot of Goosebumps, but with a few stars in it.
It's definitely not bad and don't think it merits a bad review, it just seems oddly put together.

This isn't a terrible movie, but it isn't going to become a classic kid-oriented horror movie. All I could think of while watching this was that the writers were trying to create a Stephen King or Steven Spielberg style of story, and failing. Especially King; the setting, the characters, the plot, were all very derivative of his writing.
Of course, kids seeing this won't recognize those obvious influences, so will enjoy the movie. But I doubt if it's one that they will want to see more than once.
