I've watched many educational, heartbreaking movies and documentaries about Occupied Palestine and I found this documentary to stand out in the tone in which it was told. The resilience, the joy that comes across and the bravery were so beautiful to witness. It was humorous while the subject matter is rarely lighthearted. I rooted for the cows and for the people. The multitude of emotions were beautifully depicted. I will be recommending this documentary to others. It could also be a good choice for public screenings. It leaves me with hope and acts as a reminder to be grateful and to build community everywhere we can.

A quirky film with amusing use of animations and relatable real life characters telling the unknown story of life in a Christian town on the occupied West Bank during the First Intifada. A cunning plan is hatched to enable the boycott of Israeli products, just one element in a programme of social welfare and community actions designed to enable self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of an overbearing occupation presence that determined that the cows were 'a threat to national security'. The story is recounted by those involved with humour and good grace, and you sigh wistfully at the end with regret for what could have been.

The Wanted 18 (2014) was directed by Paul Cowan and Amer Shomali. It's a documentary with added footage--the 18 cows are animated.

This movie tries to bring some humor into a ghastly situation. A Palestinian village (legally) buys 18 cows from Israel. The venture is a success--the Palestinians have their own milk supply, so they no longer have to buy Israeli milk.

However, the success leads to the downfall of their project, because the Israelis decide that owning cows is illegal, and they start to hunt for them. No matter how hard you try to laugh, in the end you feel like crying. That's the reality of the situation, and it isn't pretty.

We saw this movie in the excellent Little Theatre in Rochester, NY as part of the outstanding Witness Palestine Film Series. It will work well on the small screen.
