Queens of Jazz: The Joy and Pain of the Jazz Divas

There are some awesome jazz diva's featured here but it is all a little bite sized but you see some nice period jazz footage of these ladies in their pomp and sadly some footage in their declining years where the bulb has dimmed a little.

Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald started out in the 1930s and 1940s in the big band era, male dominated and singer could be the only female in the bus. The black singers featured also had to deal with racism in their professional lives. The singers also had tumultuous private life mainly because they found unsuitable men.

Peggy Lee and Annie Ross also feature in this programme. Ross is the only person who is still alive and even she has lived at eventful life which includes substance abuse.

Not sure I found some of the talking heads to be a valuable contribution, I kind of wondered what Lisa Stansfield was doing here.

The women featured deserve a more in-depth documentary, divas who grew up in poverty and triumph over adversity to become some of the greatest voices in jazz.
