Poison Pen

Poison Pen is an Irish film with unfamiliar faces - and one that I am hoping to see more of.

P. C. Molloy is a highly-regarded author. His first book was such a hit that the publisher gave him $400,000 for a second book. He never delivered.

Later the publisher took over another company, one which publishes the gossip rag Poison Pen. The editor claims that P. C. owes the company $400,000 and he has to work for Poison Pen. Appalled, he is told he has three days to finish his book or: he will appear at her office on Monday or be taken to court. He shows up.

The interviewees and the reading audience love him. And as time goes on, he and his female editor grow closer. Problems arise.

P. C. Is played by Lochlann O'Mearain, and the editor, April Devereaux, by Aoibhinn McGinnity. One small problem I had, since not before familiar with the actors, I had trouble differentiating these very pretty Irish women.

The standout for me was O'Meara, a handsome, likable, charming man reminiscent of Michael Wetherly or Jeff Bridges. He was wonderful and funny. I hope to see more of his work.

Decent little script, perfectly okay performances. The camera work... what on earth happened? There are scenes where it appears they couldn't decide whether to use a stationary camera or go handheld, so they decided to just shake the camera randomly. It's nausea inducing and has no artistic or symbolic purpose.
