Hereditary, Old, and A Quiet Place: Day One star Alex Wolff is preparing to helm his sophomore feature, the dark psychological thriller If She Burns, in which he’ll also star. The multi-hyphenate talent recently provided Deadline with an update on the film, teasing a “dark, emotional” ride ahead.
If She Burns will also star Victoria Pedretti (“You,” “The Haunting of Hill House”), Asa Butterfield (All Fun and Games, Flux Gourmet, Choose ofDie) and Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Quarry).
The film “follows a fiery young woman (Victoria Pedretti) who travels to Europe with her dysfunctional family after a traumatic incident. She finds refuge and danger in a turbulent affair with her enigmatic neighbor (Wolff), which along with increasing family tensions and mysterious wildfires, threaten to push her to breaking point.”
“It’s a dark but also warm and emotional thriller,” Wolff told Deadline.

The Gold debuted on the BBC last year and was met with wonderful accolades. And rightly so. The miniseries was inspired by the strange real-life events that unfolded on November 26, 1983, when six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport and planned to steal £1m. They inadvertently stumbled across £26m gold bullion instead.
Those real-life elements ignite The Gold, which made its debut on Paramount+ on September 17. Whether it becomes one of the streamers biggest hits of the year, as it did on the BBC, remains to be seen. Regardless, the series is primed to generate interest and, in between Star Trek seasons, it’s one of the more intriguing outings to hit Paramount+ this fall.
The all-star cast is something to savor. Created and written by Neil Forsyth (Guilt), The Gold features: Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), Dominic Cooper (Preacher), Charlotte Spencer...

[This interview contains spoilers for Scream (2022).]
There’s plenty of life left in Woodsboro as Neve Campbell’s Scream (2022) is the third film in the meta-slasher franchise to open atop the domestic box office.
In Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “requel,” Campbell reprises her signature role as Sidney Prescott, introducing her to a whole new generation of Woodsboro kids that face the threat of Ghostface. As a legacy sequel, a number of viewers expected at least one legacy character to meet their end, and some even thought that Campbell’s character might finally go the way of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Ultimately, that did not happen as the responsibility instead belonged to David Arquette’s Dewey. For Campbell, seeing Sidney become a victim of Ghostface is something she never wants to see on-screen since she represents survival to so many people.
“I think it is important [that she never becomes a victim in these movies],” Campbell tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Joey Klein’s opioid addiction drama tells the story of Henry (Alex Wolff) as he sinks into a world of drugs and violence following the death of his mother. Set in Sudbury, Ontario, Henry turns to his mother’s allergy medication and befriends Ana (Imogen Poots) – his troublesome and noisy neighbour.
Castle In The Ground focuses on a small town struggling with an opioid epidemic. Henry’s fast-track through life showcases his enforced maturity as he cares for his sick mother. He is denied the opportunity to make the mistakes of a teenager as he constantly reiterates their deal – he goes to college when she gets healthy again. This oppression leads him to come to terms with grief by entangling himself in the dangerous world of Ana’s opioid addiction.
Their relationship builds upon Ana’s reliance on medication and Henry’s loss. She gives him apple pie for free...

During this 1-on-1 phone interview with Collider, actress Neve Campbell talked about tackling the important subject of opioid abuse, …...

Castle in the Ground, directed and penned by Joey Klein (The Other Half), is an uncompromising narrative that centers on Henry (Alex Wolff), a teenager who is understandably shaken by his mother’s (Neve Campbell) passing.

No matter what kind of story you’re trying to tell, getting two talented actors for central roles is an excellent first step. In the case of Castle in the Ground, even a premise that descends into some questionable territory is heavily mitigated by who you’re watching engage in these acts. Here, it’s Imogen Poots and Alex Wolff, with the latter having a truly tough leading role to play. The movie goes to some dark places and makes some debatable narrative decisions, but Poots and Wolff are so inherently watchable that you’re willing to forgive some of its trespasses. The movie is a drama about addiction. Henry (Wolff) is taking care of his sick mother Rebecca (Neve Campbell). She doesn’t have long to live, with her pain managed by medicine that Henry dispenses to her. When she passes away, Henry is at a loss, breaking up...

It’s a relatively slim week in new releases, even by the standards of the ongoing coronavirus shutdown — although there are a few gems to be found, if you hunt hard enough. Families have “Scoob!” which Warner Bros. decided to make available directly via digital, following the recent success of “Trolls World Tour.” And grownups can check out Tom Hardy playing the shell of a notorious gangster in “Capone.” Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.
High-profile on-demand studio and indie offerings:
Capone (Josh Trank)
Distributor: Vertical Entertainment
Where to Find It: Rent on Amazon, iTunes and other on-demand platforms.
In “Capone,” Tom Hardy, as the aging, broken-down, not-all-there Al Capone, acts under a corpse-gray mask of desiccated-mobster makeup. Is “Capone” a fascinatingly idiosyncratic twilight-of-the-mobster drama? Or is it a “Saturday Night Live” sketch with pretensions? It may be a bit of both.

Percy Jackson author, Rick Riordan and his wife Becky announced via Twitter today that they are working on a live-action Percy Jackson series for Disney+.
"We can't say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original "Percy Jackson" five-book series, starting with "The Lightning Thief" in season one."
Riordan went on to say that he and his wife would be involved in person in every aspect of the show, a comment making a clear reference to the fact that Riordan felt that the earlier live-action projects based on his popular book series diverged from his intent. 20th Century Fox had made the earlier films, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Both films scored around $200 million at the worldwide box office. While not scoring...

As the world is ravaged by the novel coronavirus, another public health crisis continues to take a devastating toll. Castle in the Ground is a harrowing descent into the depths of opioid addiction. It vividly portrays the downward spiral and eventual rock bottom of prescription drug abuse. The criminal aspect of the plot becomes too fantastic. Especially when other heady themes are developed, then strangely ignored. The lure of a quick fix to dull the pain is understood. The agony of withdrawal erases all convictions and boundaries.
Castle in the Ground takes place in Sudbury, Canada circa 2012. Henry (Alex Wolff) shares a small apartment with Rebecca (Neve Campbell), his cancer stricken mother. Henry foregoes college to be his mother's caretaker. He dutifully crushes her pills, goes to the pharmacy, and drives to medical appointments. Henry embraces his Jewish faith. He prays for his mother's recovery.
Henry is transfixed by a raucous new neighbor.

In its opening scenes, the grief drama “Castle in the Ground” looks like it’s going to be a sweet, simplistic film about family bonding. The story begins with Henry (Alex Wolff) taking care of his sick mother (Neve Campbell), nursing her to health with daily prescriptions. He cares for her deeply, prays for her constantly, and drives her to church on Sundays despite Sudbury’s chilly weather.

In movies as in life, there is a familiar exasperation that often comes with witnessing people personally (rather than professionally) involved with addicts, as they try to make excuses for manipulative, mercurial behavior, chasing the user’s “new leaf” promises like a carrot on a stick. Fervently hoping for positive change, their desire to help can curdle into unintentional enabling. Plus, as engrossing as addiction may be from the inside, when viewed externally it sure can be monotonous.
Those are problems “Castle in the Ground” can’t quite escape in dramatic terms, as this well-acted second feature from actor-turned-director Joey Klein charts a grieving youth’s terrible choice of succor in the company of his junkie neighbor. Part gritty portrait of a mutually destructive drug-based relationship à la “Crush” or “Panic in Needle Park,” part crime thriller, the film never quite grips enough on either plane. The result is an earnest,...

‘Castle in the Ground’ Review: Alex Wolff and Imogen Poots Star in a Potent and Painful Opioid Drama
Even as “Castle in the Ground” begins to fray and fall apart, Joey Klein’s dour but gripping opioid drama remains believable for how perfectly it dovetails with its grieving protagonist. Like 19-year-old Henry Fine (Alex Wolff) — a nice Jewish boy who lives with his dying mom (Neve Campbell) in a necrotic Sudbury apartment complex — the film is sensitive and mesmeric and oh so close to moments of cathartic beauty. And like 19-year-old Henry Fine — a grieving orphan who inherits his mom’s leftover OxyContin and fentanyl patches after she dies from Hodgkin’s lymphoma (or from an overdose of the treatment she’s been prescribed for it) — Klein’s film grows distressed, unsure of itself, and lost in a trite crime thriller that spirals away from what made it special in the first place.
And yet “Castle in the Ground” is so that it often feels as if it...

Scream 5 is finally happening and we recently learned that Neve Campbell is in early talks to return as Sidney Prescott once again. Now, the star of the franchise has discussed a little bit more about the project, revealing how directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett approached her about returning, as well as their plan to honor the late Wes Craven. Though, Campbell admits it will be odd to make a new Scream movie without the man who brought the franchise into existence.
Neve Campbell is currently promoting her latest movie, Castle in the Ground. During a recent interview, she was asked about Scream 5 and whether or not it was weird to think about making it without Wes Craven, who directed all four previous installments. Here's what Campbell had to say about it.

Some films are uniquely unsuited for pandemic lockdown viewing. Take for instance Castle in the Ground, a moderately affecting grief drama that builds a compelling intimacy and then allows it to evaporate as it lurches unpersuasively into a claustrophobic quasi-thriller set against the backdrop of the opioid crisis in Sudbury, Ontario. A layered lead performance from Alex Wolff fosters emotional involvement only up to a point given that great chunks of the movie are spent in dingy apartments experiencing woozy OxyContin highs amid artful chiaroscuro lighting. Not how most folks will be looking to fill their downtime right now.

"I'm sorry that you got roped into all of this. You seem like a good kid." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled Castle in the Ground, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and also at the Vancouver Film Festival. A grieving teenager named Henry befriends his charismatic but troubled next-door neighbor, Ana, and soon becomes embroiled in a world of addiction and violence just as the opioid epidemic takes hold of their small town. Alex Wolff stars with Imogen Poots, plus Tom Cullen, Star Slade, Kiowa Gordon, Keir Gilchrist, and Neve Campbell. Interesting to see this uses the 4:3 aspect ratio, but perhaps it adds to the overall distressing feel of this film. It's worth a look. Working on “Human Capital” was a reunion for Alex Wolff and Maya Hawke.
The two play love interests in the indie thriller about a horrific accident that causes two families to fracture as secrets are uncovered and threatened to be exposed.
It turns out that Wolff and Hawke went to pre-school together in New York City. They even dressed as Power Rangers together for Halloween, Wolff, 22, tells me on this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s weekly podcast. “I feel like Maya’s going to deny that she dressed as a Power Ranger for Halloween, and I just want to go on record, she’s lying,” Wolff cracked.
In the movie, Wolff plays a loner with anger issues. He’s very similar to the high schooler he plays in “The Cat and the Moon,” which also marked his feature film writing and directing debut.

Every few years, a movie comes along that attempts to tackle the revolving drug epidemic from the perspective of the user; with varying degrees of success. Be it Requiem for a Dream, Spun, or something more expansive like Traffic or Sicario, the really great movies on the subject are less about the drugs and more about the people. Castle in the Ground is a decidedly smaller budget entry into this already well-treaded territory.
