This drama is everything k drama is good at. The traditional 16 hour format, beautiful storytelling and character development with well researched sets. The characters are all great actors, but LeeJunho is a true stand out. Already a Baeksang winning actor for The Red Sleeves, and well known for Guwon in King The Land, his portrayal of Kang TaePoong may surpass them all. His subtle facial expressions and gazes take the audience with him on Taepoong's journey of highs and lows. Kim Minha plays her part so naturally, and the whole cast blends is excellent.
For Koreans, there are many very small details that are all accurate. For example, clocks on the wall, messages on shoes, Korean bred roses, bank books ... to name a few. For the rest of us, it is a unique time in history to learn about.
I haven't watched a k drama like this for a long time. It's truly a masterpiece.

I haven't watched a k drama like this for a long time. It's truly a masterpiece.
So you may be asking yourself, "if they love it how come only a six?"
So here's the thing, without giving away any spoilers, every one to two episode/s is the same. Obviously the micro details change but the development of each episode pretty much follows every episode previous.
It would be great, if they haven't finished filming, if there was more character development, and longer storylines.
I'll still keep watching, but I'm already starting to fast forward through the parts that are so boring because I know exactly what's going to happen.

Typhoon Family captures the human side of South Korea's 1997 IMF crisis with compassion and nuance. The story follows Kang Tae-poong, a carefree young heir forced to inherit and save his father's collapsing trading company amid national turmoil. Lee Junho is superb - restrained, heartbreaking, and wholly believable as a man learning responsibility while carrying private grief, also delivering perfect comic relief! His is a complex character that few could have pulled off so egregiously. Awesome cast as a whole, with a fantastic, nuanced Kim MinHa. Was wondering about Kim Min-ha's chemistry with Junho - and they don't disappoint. Their interactions feel organic, full of quiet tension and warmth that sneak up on you. The 90s period setting is beautifully recreated - from the color palette to the cultural atmosphere - creating both nostalgia and emotional weight, and the script balances warmth, humor, and sorrow with a deft hand. Junho's own vocals on the OST ("Did You See the Rainbow?") beautifully underscore the drama's emotional core. Thoughtful, beautifully acted, and deeply resonant - every episode lingers in the soul, with an amazing rewatch value - offering new layers of emotion, story, and craftsmanship with each rewatch.
Stories about characters striving to achieve their dreams are always special. When done right, such shows can be both eye-opening and deeply motivational. Typhoon Family is exactly that - a brilliant blend of likable, relatable characters, consistently realistic storytelling, and timeless themes of determination, perseverance, and hard work.
Set against the dreary backdrop of an economically unstable Korea, this drama is on a clear path to becoming one of the year's best.
The main character is as good as it gets - smart, charming, youthful, kind, and undeniably handsome. I could go on and on about Kang Tae-poong, but what truly stands out is how perfectly Lee Junho embodies him. Tae-poong often finds himself in over his head, yet he's never afraid to ask for help, never afraid to fail, and never afraid to try again. He's resilient and optimistic, but even the strongest have a breaking point - and I'm eager to see his. Still, with his passion, sharp instincts, and strong support system, it's hard to imagine him not succeeding.
Our female lead complements him beautifully. She's intelligent, dutiful, and far more than just a romantic interest. She's a fully developed character with her own struggles and obstacles to overcome. The supporting cast also contributes meaningfully, each serving the story effectively in their own capacities.
Typhoon Family is very much a character-driven drama rather than a plot-driven one. The characters shape their own destinies, and their choices naturally move the story forward. Themes of ambition, greed, trust, perseverance, and the balance of risk and reward are woven neatly into the narrative, delivering powerful life and business lessons along the way. I know I've personally learned a thing or two.
I was once asked why I watch K-dramas when I'm so particular about solid plot writing and complex characters. The answer is simple - every once in a while, a drama like Typhoon Family comes along. A show so well-crafted that it can rival even the best of Hollywood's productions. And honestly, I wouldn't want to miss it for the world.

Today I watched the first episode, and I am totally hooked! Such a great start by Lee Jun Ho and Kim Min Ha. And I must say, the cast is top-class. This drama has an excellent supporting cast; I personally love Kim Min-seok and Sung Dong-il. Kim Min Seok is such an entertaining actor, and he is the best "Best Friend" ever and ever. And have to say, this is my first time watching Kim Min Ha's acting, and she is superb. As this character is intelligent, responsible one I personally think she will suit more than Geom Sae Rok, who was previously considered for this role. And, now words for Jun Ho, I really enjoy his character. He is one of the finest idol-turned-actors, and I wish this drama is gonna be a huge hit! For the last few days, I was juggling from one drama to another, finding a match for my interest, and as a slice of life lover, this is perfect for me. I'm crossing fingers for a beautiful plot. Fighting!!!!!!
