Alien: Romulus was hailed by fans and critics alike and turned in strong box office numbers, but it seems that won't be enough to keep Fede Álvarez on board for the sequel, at least as its director.
Álvarez will remain involved with the follow-up as a producer and co-writer alongside Rodo Sayagues, but the Evil Dead director wants his next directorial effort to be on an original concept, not an existing IP.
Speaking to TooFab, Alvarez cited the fact that the Alien franchise has somewhat thrived on the notion of directors passing the torch to new, up-and-coming filmmakers, and he wants to keep that loose tradition going.

Shawn Hatosy and Merritt Wever won the awards for best drama guest actor and actress at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys.
Hatosy earned both his first Emmy nomination and win for his role as Dr. Jack Abbot in the premiere season of HBO’s The Pitt. “I very much want to thank John Wells who has thrown me so many lifelines over the years,” Hatosy said, shouting out the show’s co-creator and executive producer, in his acceptance speech. “I’d say more but I’m gonna cry and that would be embarassing,” he added before also acknowledging his co-star and series lead.
“Noah Wyle, your leadership, your performance on The Pitt is extraordinary,” Hatosy continued. “It’s unbelievable being on the other side of what you’re bringing.”
Wever, who didn’t attend the awards, received her third Emmy for her portrayal of Gretchen George in season two of Severance.

The 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony wrapped up its first night of the weekend with Apple TV+ dominating thanks to The Studio and Severance.
The Studio led the field with nine awards, which is now only two from The Bear's all-time record for a comedy series — with several more chances at next week's Primetime Emmys to match or surpass the mark. Among its haul was Best Comedy Guest Actor for Bryan Cranston, his seventh career Emmy. Meanwhile, Severance tallied six Emmys to lead all dramas, including a surprise win for Best Drama Guest Actress for Merritt Wever, who now has three Emmys in her trophy case.

The annual two-day event, which takes place the weekend before the Primetime Emmys, will give dozens of awards to mostly below-the-line categories on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7.
Early winners on Night 1 included Nicholson for best guest actress in a comedy series for Hacks, Cranston for best guest actor in a comedy series for The Studio, Wever for best guest actress in a drama series for Severance and Hatosy for best guest actor in a drama series for The Pitt.

“The Studio” was the big winner at Night 1 of the Creative Arts Emmys, ending the evening with nine wins. It was a hard-fought victory: The Apple TV+ comedy series was locked in a continual back-and-forth with HBO Max’s “The Penguin,” which went home with eight wins.

Despite the past few years of mergers, rebranding, re-rebranding, and everything else Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav has done, HBO has held onto its reputation as the definitive home for high-quality television. The network essentially created what we now know as "prestige TV" more than 25 years ago, and while many competitors have entered the space, especially in the streaming era, modern series like "The Last of Us," "Succession," and "The White Lotus" have kept HBO on top.
Over those two and a half decades, there have been a wide range of popular shows on HBO, but no genre has defined the network quite the crime drama -- the genre...

Some TV shows like to take their time before pulling you in, while others just grab you right away in the very first few minutes. The opening scene really can shape everything—it sets the tone, tells you what kind of world you’re being introduced to, and sometimes even shows you something that’ll stay in your head long after the credits roll.
In fantasy and sci-fi especially, where worlds are often magical and strange, and the rules are different, the very first scene can matter more than ever. It can make you feel awe, or fear, and in the best cases, both at once.

Season 2 of a show with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes has taken the top spot on HBO Max's streaming charts. In the late 1990s and in the 2000s, many of HBO's all-time best series were released, and cemented the brand's legacy with the likes of The Sopranos, Oz, and The Wire.
In the 2010s, HBO further strengthened its reputation for delivering critically acclaimed series, and proved it could do so in the fantasy and science-fiction genres. The television landscape, not only in fantasy, was forever changed by Game of Thrones and how it became a popular culture phenomenon. HBO also made its mark on science fiction with the acclaimed first season of Westworld.

At this weekend's Creative Arts Emmys, all eyes will be on the three casting races for drama, comedy, and limited series. History tells us whatever shows win there have about an 80 percent chance of claiming victory in the corresponding program races at the Primetime Emmys.

Tom Cruise is reportedly not happy with another star rising through the ranks in Hollywood. The report from RadarOnline says that he allegedly can’t stand the success that Pedro Pascal is enjoying in Hollywood right now. The insider who spoke to Radar shared that Cruise didn’t want to lose his title of being the world’s biggest star.
Interestingly, Cruise and Pascal are represented by the same agency, CAA. The source claimed that while Pascal couldn’t care less about his stardom, Cruise is allegedly “ultra-intense” about things. The source shared that Cruise wasn’t happy with how much effort CAA is putting behind Pascal to make him a major star.

TNT Sports will soon launch its own direct-to-consumer app, much like ESPN and Fox have done.
More and more programmers are taking their channels direct-to-consumer, as channel owners increasingly see the cable bundle as unsustainable. ESPN and Fox have both launched Dtc streaming services in the past month, and now a new one could be on the way to offer even more sports outside the cable bundle. The new streamer is on the way from TNT Sports, whose future top man, Gunnar Wiedenfels, teased that the Dtc product could be hitting the market soon on Wednesday.
Key Details: Under construction: Wiedenfels says the company is working on a new TNT Sports app.

That's because, starting today, HBO’s U.S. linear channels are getting a round of fresh names. Yay!
Here’s the latest round of musical chairs: HBO2 is now HBO Hits, HBO Signature is now HBO Drama, HBO Zone is now HBO Movies, and on the Cinemax side, MoreMAX is Cinemax Hits, ActionMAX is Cinemax Action, and 5starMAX becomes Cinemax Classics.

HBO Max has had a strong start in Australia, and now it’s got another route into the local market.
The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has launched on Prime Video as an add-on subscription, a move that follows its debut in the country back in March. Though many considered the roll-out late in a market that already has heavy SVOD penetration, estimates are that it has secured upwards of 5% of the total market already.
On Prime Video, it will be available for A$11.99 a month ($7.82) for the Basic with Ads tier or A$15.99 a month for the Standard package.
HBO Max offers shows such as The Pitt, And Just Like That…, Peacemaker, House of the Dragon, The White Lotus and The Last of Us, legacy series including Friends and The Big Bang Theory and Warner Bros. movies including Minecraft, Sinners, Harry Potter and the DC Universe.

Today, reports are pouring in that the long-gestating project is happening, with Turner poised to play Lara Croft.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the creator, writer, and executive producer of Amazon’s Tomb Raider series. Chad Hodge and Jonathan Van Tulleken are executive producers. In addition to executive producing, Tulleken will direct the production. Production begins on my birthday, January 19, next year.
Amazon greenlit Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series in May 2024, with Turner circling the role six months later.

A recent Puck report claimed that Paramount Pictures was hoping to get a feature adaptation of incredibly popular first-person shooter military video game series, Call of Duty, up and running after entering talks to acquire the rights, and we now have confirmation that a live-action Cod movie is heading to theaters.
According to THR, Activision and Paramount have "inked a deal that will see the studio develop, produce and distribute a live-action film based on the game franchise."

After eight years away from feature filmmaking, Kathryn Bigelow has returned in explosive fashion. Her latest thriller, A House of Dynamite, premiered at the Venice Film Festival to glowing early reviews, setting the stage for its rollout in theaters and on Netflix this fall, while Netflix has also dropped the trailer for the film. The nuclear thriller, written by Noah Oppenheim, imagines the White House scrambling to identify and respond to an unattributed missile launch against the United States. With Bigelow behind the camera, critics are calling it a terrifyingly plausible nightmare scenario.

Mark Wahlberg’s next movie is coming to theaters in just a few months, but ahead of its arrival, one of his most underrated films just got a devastating streaming update. Wahlberg stars alongside Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) and Rose Byrne (Platonic) in Instant Family, the 2018 coming-of-age drama following a couple who find more than they bargained for when they foster three children. Instant Family has been streaming on Netflix for the last few months, but the streamer has, tragically, announced that the last day to watch the film will be on September 12.

Video game adaptations are having a moment on television. Animated heavyweights like "Arcane" and "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" have found a firm foothold on Netflix, while live-action juggernauts "Fallout" and "The Last of Us" are scooping up Emmy nominations for Prime Video and HBO. These series have dominated online discourse, hailed as benchmarks for how to translate gaming narratives to the small screen successfully. And yet, conspicuously absent from these virtual water cooler conversations is "Twisted Metal," Peacock's gonzo, blood-soaked demolition derby of a show that might just be one of the most self-aware and emotionally resonant adaptations of the bunch.

With the curse of video game adaptations long since put to bed by the likes of Tomb Raider, HBO's The Last Of Us, Prime Video's Fallout, and — at least in box office terms — A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Yes, per Variety's reporting, Paramount has just signed a major deal with Microsoft-owned game devs Activision to make a live-action movie based on the iconic first-person shooter franchise.

Few franchises carry a legacy as heavy as Star Wars. Since 1977, George Luca's space opera has conquered generations with its blend of adventres, fantasy, politics, and good old family drama. But here's the twist: that same legacy has become both iths crown jewel and its achilles heel. Today, the galaxy far, far away faces a paradox it's still a cultural phenomenon, yet new releases often struggle to meet the expectations of fans and critics alike.
The Biggest Mistake: Zero Planning
If there's one thing everyone agrees on, it's this: recent Star Wars has suffered from a massive lack of planning. The sequel trilogy is Exhibit A. Each film felt...

Film and animation adaptations of video games have earned a respectable reputation in recent years. This includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Arcane, Fallout, The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal. That's only scratching the surface of this saturated market, and Paramount wants to add to the mix with a Call of Duty movie, the first of its kind.
With many more video game movies and shows on the way, like Arcane projects, Assassin's Creed, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, Splinter Cell, and more, Call of Duty immediately grabs attention and sets a high bar for itself. Not necessarily because of masterful video game movies and shows of other IPs that have come before,...

HBO Max doesn’t normally come with a free trial, even through Prime Video, but you can try free for seven days now.
One of the factors that can keep some customers from opting into HBO Max is the streamer’s lack of a free trial. HBO Max has a ton of premium content, but you usually don’t get a free trial to enjoy the service, even if you sign up to add HBO Max as an extra with Prime Video. However, if you sign up for HBO Max through Prime Video right now, you can enjoy a seven-day free trial of either the ad-supported or ad-free plan service.
