For someone that doesn't know the story, it's a good documentary.

Shannan Gilbert had been working as an escort, she vanishes, the eventual search unearths a series of bodies, it becomes apparent that a serial killer has been getting away with multiple murders without the alarm being raised.

Reading some of the reviews, I'll take one point on board, it is a story that has been explored multiple times, and there comes a point where you think, enough now, but for someone unaware of the ins and outs, it's a good documentary.

Episode one was pretty factual, it felt quite informative, procedural so to speak, I appreciated the way they told the story of the poor victims, the same couldn't be said of episodes two and three, they really did go for the gotcha moments, but the stork itself is so unbelievably shocking, it does actually work.

There were some really eye opening moments, including various interviews and some interesting footage.

The final episode felt a little ambiguous at times, but that's the nature of the story itself.

It's terrifying to think now many crimes Rex Heuermann got away with, The Police and Authorities really did fail the victims and their families in spectacular fashion.

7/10.

Victim focus a welcome perspective

True crime documentaries are not really my cup of tea. They are often sensationalist and voyeurist, concentrating on the gruesome nature of murder to provide entertainment. Gone Girls offers a victim-focus that is a welcome perspective.

Since I knew nothing of this case I may be an outlier, however this limited-episode series was, to me at least, an interesting and engaging overview of these events. It would be disingenuous to claim that Gone Girls is enjoyable, however this is not to criticise the documentary's creators. It certainly stands above other entries in the genre that I have seen.

The facts of what happened are shocking enough on their own merits that sensationalism is not required; the conclusion (thus far) of the case raises many concerns, not least the manner in which authorities appear to have reinforced the wider presumption that there are members of society that they consider not deserving of justice. That these human beings are often amongst the most vulnerable is a damning irony.

It is clear that there remains much still to be uncovered; if a follow-up series was to maintain a victim-focussed narrative it would be worthwhile viewing.

Good Documentary on Long Island Serial Killer

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer is a decent documentary about one of the most publicized serial killer investigations of all time. After years of sex workers going missing and remains being found in the Gilgo Beach area of upscale Long Island an arrest of Manhattan architect, Rex Huermann, was made. This movie takes place pre-trial phase of this investigation and arrest. The angle is very much based upon the Shannon Gilbert disappearance, which is the case that blew the case open; however, has not been linked to the other disappearances and murders. There is a lot of news footage. There are many press interviews. There are many questions still remaining, but this does a good job summarizing the case and investigation up until it was made.

Lost and Gone

No pun intended - the show (documentary style) is really well done. But I should not have started it for my own sake. It was just something that was fitting from the run time and my own schedule ... now I do not want to make light of the real cases here. The show is doing them justice (again no pun intended and not giving anything away if you catch what I am saying) - but you have to be in the mood for this true crime stuff.

Which is why I am trying to tell everyone to watch out (and maybe in), to what you are about to get here. I reckon it had to be a few episodes to get everything in - so I wouldn't even say this is way too long (it isn't relatively speaking) ... but as you may have realized ... so much pain is tough to get through. There are some voices of reason (but do individuals who have lost someone really listen to those? And are they even able to?) ... so good interviews, a lot of uncovering ... as much as possible actually. So well done overall - if it is your cup of tea.

Good stuff

One of the better true crime docu-series that I've seen in awhile. I went into it completely blind and had no idea about the case or any of the details involving it. This was a very pleasant surprise. It's very well done and is incredibly shocking and entertaining. I only wish that they'd have waited a bit until after the accused trial for a proper ending to it. I definitely felt a little disappointed by how it ended. Overall this is one of Netflixs' better true crime series that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the subject. Like I said before, it would have been extremely satisfying to see the trial and the conviction of Red and really don't understand why they didn't wait until they could do an episode on that before wrapping it up, but maybe there will be a follow up. Knowing Netflix probably lol.

Somewhat spoiled by commentary from journalists

The pointless, unhelpful commentary by the two journalists in the first episode made me want to just stop watching this series. Robert Kolker was especially annoying, using the purple prose from his silly articles, such as "A gigantic meteorite hit Long Island." I would suppose he was referring to the impact of the discovery of skeletons. He also had nothing to contribute in the way of factual information about the case.

The other journalist, reporter Jaclyn Gallucci, wasn't much better, making her comments center on herself: what she was thinking, etc. Maybe this was an attempt to avoid a narrator, but narration may have been better than having two self-important journalists making comment.

Excellent detective series

While in the beginning looks like lost case , after 2 episodes starts adding more caracteres and police heads . Surely the end will surprise you . Excellent investigation for more than 30 years . I would say the third episode is the best , so it's worth it the wait !

Police , FBI, relatives , tv news from the past, a very well documented series . If you saw another one in the past about the same killings , this one has new information that will blow your mind . Even the smartest psicopats are getting caught at some point .

I'm sure there is room for a second season , wait and see . Enjoy the series .

Excellent Hunt for a Serial Killer Doc

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, is another great Netflix true crime documentary, probably one of their best. This is a deep-dive into the heart of evil, the corrupt officials who allow that evil to go unchecked, the innocent people whose lives are affected, and the family members who never give up to fight for justice.

It starts with a mysterious case of a young woman, who was a sex worker (but this does not diminish who she was in any way shape or form) who disappeared under mysterious circumstances and it took many months before police start to look for her. When they do, they uncover body parts of several woman hidden in the marshes in Long Island. The pattern unravels that this is the work of a serial killer, and the hunt (should be) on to find him.

What follows is an example of how corrupt police and prosecutors put their own jobs on the line instead of doing what is right in the name of justice, and this serial killer is allowed to go on doing his work for over a decade. These idiot cops and prosecutors even block the FBI from investigating the case. The parents of the victims stop at nothing to bring awareness to the crimes against their children, and there are some journalists and attorneys who pursue justice as well, and in this documentary you really are held no the edge of your seat as the story unravels.

One of the more messed up parts of the story is that the suspect starts to call the sister of one of his victims and taunt her over the phone. This is seriously a demented person.

There is a TON of evidence of who the killer is, and the fact so little of it was pursued is a serious injustice. For example, there were eyewitnesses who had identified a suspect that the police did not follow up on until they read a report almost a decade later. (And, for those two men, you should have gone to the FBI / media sooner with your story and what were both of you doing living with a woman who had to sell her body for money?) The police knew the killer lived in a certain area of Long Island and most likely worked in Manhattan, and instead of narrowing down their suspect...well, the cops just did nothing.

Finally, DNA evidence from new people in charge of the case surfaces and they have their man...and wow as to how nobody connected the dots on this guy for so long is just infuriating. This guy was 6'8, 300 lbs, and lived in a run down home in the suburbs and had creeped out his neighbors for decades. Hmmm. And why did they even need DNA to grab him with all the circumstantial evidence.

It does feel there is tons to this case that has yet to be revealed. But, for now, this is a good series that really shares the story of all involved. Hopefully, justice will be done in the end and the guilty will be punished and the sister who was taunted will have her final say.

Dumb filters

Interesting show but the ridiculous "artistic" filters is making it hard to watch. It's like they are trying to make it look like a story recorded back in the days of standard definition TV. Annoying as hell.

The disturbing theme seems to be the police were not at all engaged in this process until bodies were discovered. There appears to be countless family members, pleading for help are offering up clues and nobody calls them back.

I recall this in the news, but the show does a great job taking us behind the scenes. It's rather mind blowing. It also has to be tough for loved ones to relive in interviews and to watch. Good show if you can make it through the ridiculous filters.

N/A

Sure! Here's a 4/10 review of Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer:

Rating: 4/10

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer had the potential to be a gripping true crime docuseries, but unfortunately it falls flat in several key areas. While the subject matter is undeniably haunting and important, the execution lacks the depth and nuance it deserves.

The pacing drags, with repetitive interviews and rehashed information that feels like filler rather than progress. There's a noticeable lack of new insights or investigative breakthroughs-something seasoned true crime fans crave. The storytelling leans heavily on sensationalism rather than respectful, thoughtful exploration of the victims' lives, which can feel exploitative at times.

The production value is decent, but nothing stands out. It's a by-the-numbers entry in a crowded genre, failing to distinguish itself or bring anything particularly fresh to the table. Overall, it might work as background noise for casual viewers, but anyone looking for a compelling, well-crafted true crime deep dive will likely be disappointed.

Interesting series, with self sabatoge.

Corruption, and self sabatoge in the search of the girls who were victims. Its upsetting for these families to of gone through this all because the people who should of helped were the problem. We can see this throughout the world but especially for these families, and the poor victims who were tossed on the side for decade. I hope the guy never comes out of wherever he was placed. For this many victims and assault and torture he was mentally unstable and should not be allowed in society. It is uncurable. I dont think his jail time will ever be enough, he knew what he was doing and did it on purpose knowing they were searching for him.

Excellent Storytelling

I loved the way the story was told. The b-roll was haunting. Cinematography on spot, the music was intense. There are some images that have stayed with me. I also like how the filmmakers didn't rush to unveil the story, they kept unfolding the clues to make you thing and wonder. Netflix docs are well made and awesome. I highly recommend this to lovers of True Crime. A must see in my opinion.

What an absurd checklist and notes.

The Long Island Serial Killer, also known as the Gilgo Beach Killer, is a now identified man, responsible for the murders of multiple people over a period of nearly 20 years, primarily on Long Island, New York. The case gained national attention due to the gruesome nature of the crimes and the long period the killer remained at large.

In December 2010, Suffolk County Police were searching for a missing woman named Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker who had called 911 in distress months earlier. While searching near Gilgo Beach, police found four bodies wrapped in burlap sacks along Ocean Parkway.

In July 2023, a man named Rex Heuermann, an architect from Massapequa Park, was arrested and charged with the murders of at least three women - known as the "Gilgo Four." He is also the prime suspect in a fourth killing.

On June 6, 2024, Heuermann was charged with the murders of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla - the latter not previously linked to the Gilgo Beach case, pushing the timeline back to the early 1990s. In December, he was also indicted for the 2000 murder of Valerie Mack. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

As of 2025, the legal process is ongoing, with prosecutors continuing to investigate his possible involvement in other unsolved murders.

I did not know about this killer and this story. I found this documentary interesting and it never felt like it was dragging. The thing that shocked me the most were not the murders themselves, but the checklist and notes Rex Heuermann had on his computer that the police managed to restore. A list of how he could improve his killings and methods, which was absolutely absurd and made me sick to my stomach. Here I will copy and paste a summary of an article I read that covers most of it:

"Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann allegedly created disturbing digital checklists that show how he carefully planned and covered up his murders, which he referred to as "hunts," prosecutors revealed. These lists included "pre-prep" and "post event" steps, covering everything from logistics to disposing of evidence. Investigators uncovered these lists while examining a trove of digital devices from his home.

The checklists were organized into:

-Supplies needed.

-Pre-prep tasks (e.g., vehicle inspection, checking for traffic cameras, getting enough sleep).

-Dump site planning.

-Post-disposal actions (e.g., changing tires, preparing an alibi, deleting incriminating files).

Some chilling notes included:

-Get sleep before hunts. Too tired creates problems.

-Use heavy rope... light rope breaks under stress.

-More sleep & noise control = more playtime.

Prosecutors believe "playtime" refers to the torture and bondage of victims. The defense argues these new charges don't align with the original theory, pointing to differences like dismemberment and locations of the new alleged victims."

I I wonder about the convicted guy that's been in jail 10 years and may be innocent

It was a pretty decent documentary, but they kind of stopped at that guy who was convicted of two murders of all these women when it seems pretty obvious that he may not have actually killed those two women he's convicted of so I wish they would've went into that better as it seems the police as usual just don't want to renege on something and admit they made mistakes. That's the problem with the police.

They should definitely be reviewing. I think his name is Bitterman but I think they should review his cases and he should definitely get an appeals cause it seems Everything was circumstantial and not connected to him as far as what he was convicted on which is unfortunately happens a lot in our system. When the cops think they have the right guy they stop looking and that's exactly what happened. Here they dropped the ball and so many other people got killed people probably they don't even know about.

And that Rex guy he's never gonna admit to anything he's never gonna tell him exactly what he did or how many people but apparently they did find a whole thing on his computer that he tried to delete that's pretty damning in itself and the hairs found on the bodies.

Done to Death ( no pun intended )

Several movies and documentaries have tread this ground since the first murder in 2010 and they have all covered the same thesis , the same witnesses , the same police recordings. The same police investigators , the same annoying journalists ( who are nothing more than talking heads ). No new material is forthcoming and that makes it repeatedly ( and repeated once again ) frustrating , as the whole re experience is an exercise in treading water ? I can only assume that the director in this effort , has some tenuous link to an Oscar nomination in the past ? But not that you would get that feeling here , for all the aforementioned reasons .

Unrelated to the murders

This doc wastes so much time on the police politics. It starts with an investment of the girls lost, but quickly ignores them. For some reason it explains the weird personal story of a bad cop. It loses the entire focus of the how and why, the victims and the killer.

The demo and love for this community is unique. How this killer got away for so long is also unique. Oddly this doc focuses on the least interesting or relevant part of this case.

I love a well told crime story but this is not it and I am writing the review to say, why would you publish this? Who cares when a cop retired? I care about how the killer was raised, maybe?
