This has just about everything you could possibly want in an SNL homage. I watched it with my teens who had recently gotten into watching Weekend Updates every week, and it was a blast from the past, blending past and present beautifully. Just watching the crowd, it's fun to look out (and point out) who was there. Right from the get go it was evident everybody channeled real love into this special, and everybody was enjoying their time, well aware of the fact that they were taking part in a historical event. I can't even say exactly what my favorite moment was, but even the nostalgic, emotional beats hit just as hard as the humor.
If you've ever enjoyed SNL, this is well worth your time!

I appreciated the opening that paired Paul Simon (from the second ever SNL) with Sabrina Carpenter (from RIGHT NOW). I personally wish that they had picked a different right now "it" girl - but that's just me. Paul at the end was just magical. Those two numbers alone were done with more respect for the audience and the artists than the entire "music" special. I love both Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. The comic material was great. They found cool ways to remind us of how wide and deep the talent of the cast and the celebrities that have been on that stage over the years is. Overall, I enjoyed this a lot.

I have always loved SNL and yes, I started watching 50 years ago when it debuted. I wish they'd give had given more honor and respect to original cast members, done a real In Memory for the brilliance lost, and been a little braver in the face of what's happening politically right now. My biggest disappointment was the inclusion of the faux star Kim K. She was a disappointment as a host and with all the talent to showcase it leaves me dumbfounded as to why they would feature someone with none. There were other cringey moments, things that didn't quite land but still, overall not bad except with one notable exception.

How can I be the first human to say something about the 50year anniversary episode of SNL. I'm honored! The cast (and audience) for this is incredible. This is the funnest thing I've seen on TV all year, and don't we all need it! But I'm not gonna get all Debbie Downer now because everyone here is clearly having the time of their lives. Seeing all the familiar faces makes anyone watching feel like they are a part of the family. There's a real feeling of intimacy here, I can only imagine no-one wanted to go home at the end. If there is a place in heaven SNL lovers go to, this is what it looks like! Thanks for 50 years everyone. Keep making America fun, we love you.

Great show, so many awesome celebrities. It was a walk down memory lane. Really liked it, some of my favorite people on the planet. I have been watching for the whole fifty years. The commercials were brutal! I would have given it a ten out of ten but the commercials were really bad. They are torture. I don't know who picked the SNL graveyard skit but that was in poor taste. I am not sure if having eight two year old performers is a good idea, it was a little sad. After a couple of hours of the same commercials I started to hate them and blame companies for having awful commercials. Thanks for not trying peacock.

Honestly I know the current cast were backed up by some nostalgia and some superb celebrity cameos but why can't they be this good week, in week out.
They were more ambitious in their ideas and alot more adult orientated in their entertainment. The show has missed the hellraisers of the past and it shows.
You need to have both sides of Americas coin creating content to creating chaos. Left and right divide smashed against itself to create proper comedy.
Standout moments are Adam sandlers 50 years song, the crowd Frequently asked questions and the three time Oscar winner Meryl Streep in the UFO sketch.

SNL 50: The Anniversary Special was a highly anticipated event, bringing together past and present cast members, legendary hosts, and iconic sketches to celebrate five decades of Saturday Night Live. While the nostalgia factor was strong and there were definitely some standout moments, the special ultimately felt like a mixed bag, earning a solid 6 out of 10 from me.
The best parts of the show were the well-executed callbacks to classic sketches and the surprise guest appearances. Seeing former cast members reprise their roles brought back great memories, and there were a few genuinely funny new bits that reminded us why SNL has lasted so long. The tribute segments honoring late cast members and behind-the-scenes legends were also touching and well done.
However, the pacing was inconsistent, and some segments felt like filler rather than a true celebration of SNL's legacy. While nostalgia is great, certain sketches dragged on too long or felt more like a rehash than a fresh take. Additionally, the balance between old and new cast members felt a bit off-while longtime fans may have enjoyed the throwbacks, newer audiences might have felt a little left out.
Overall, SNL 50 was a fun but flawed tribute. It had some great highs but also some lows that kept it from being truly great. A solid watch for longtime fans, but not quite the perfect anniversary special it could have been.

It is Saturday Night Live at 50. The names don't get much bigger and that's just the audience. This opens with Sabrina Carpenter joining Paul Simon as he reprises his first performance. Paul isn't doing so well. Sabrina's age joke hits hard. Steve Martin's opening monologue also hits when he says that people can be dead by natural causes now. Eddie Murphy playing Tracy Morgan is probably the best. He actually got the others to break. Tom Hanks comes in and brings that skit to a halt. In a way, that is the quintessential SNL experience. Some of it is genius and the next is comedy death. This is better than most episodes by its sheer comedy power.

They brought an impressive array of celebrities and past cast members for this much anticipated special. Wondering who might pop up next did hold your attention. The novelty of seeing past and current cast members and the odd celebrity thrown together in skits was entertaining to some degree. There were also skits that mixed characters from different seasons, or were modern versions of old skits - all adding a novelty to the show.
BUT BUT BUT!! But novelty is not enough for a comedy show. Strip away the novelty and the skits simply weren't funny or clever or well fleshed out. The only skit that struck as funny at all was the UFO sketch with Kate McKinnon, Meryl Streep, Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, Pedro Pascal, and Aidy Bryant. The humor was mostly due to Kate's dialogue and delivery (and Harrelson and Pascal trying not to crack). Overall there's disappointingly little that sticks out at memorable, which is sad for a 50th anniversary show crammed with celebrities.

I have being a faithfull SNL viewer for more than 30 years; some seasons were great, others not so good, but on average they all have been pretty entertaining.
Now the problem with this "special" is that there was nothing new, special or notorious about it.
Throughout the whole thing I kept thinking: "same... same... same... same..." all skits and segments were all "reheated", rushed, badly written and worse (far worse) than the original.
One or two were OK, but nothing felt like a proper homage to the huge milestone that is 50 years of SNL.
To be honest, the 40th celebration was way better than this 50th. Art imitating life. Figures.

Found huge enjoyment... in the 40th Anniversary Special. With the Saturday Night film last year and all the specials running lately, I can't help remembering a show that used to push boundaries. A show willing to be controversial and bizarre. Not always hilarious, but a showcase of comedians being honest and creative.
This "special" felt contrived and safe and not particularly funny. The standouts were Martin's monologue, Sandler's song, Garret Morris introducing a classic Belishi clip, and the scared straight skit.
Everything else was run of the mill, been there done that, tame (ie lame) bits with a few mediocre music performances and lot of celebrities angling for screen time.

Congratulations to 50years of SNL!
I grew up watching these sketches and brought joy in my life.
Thought, Am I the only one who wasnt completely satisfied as I was expecting more from throwback and funny sketches or featuring the best of the best but it was just not remotely funny as compared from before. It wouldve been a great anniversary special. It was all over the place it couldve been nostalgic and relevant. Even the biggest comedian cant bring the humor from the special. I guess it wasnt the best writing.
But i must say great star casting and was amazing to see them all together.....

The "SNL 50th Anniversary Special" was a disappointing display of insensitivity, particularly due to Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' participation. Amid serious legal battles involving allegations of SH and defamation with Justin Baldoni, their decision to attend and make light of the situation was in poor taste. Reynolds' attempt at humor during a Q&A segment, where he deflected with a joke about conehead costumes, came off as dismissive of the gravity of the accusations. Lively's presence, despite her ongoing lawsuit against Baldoni, further exemplified a lack of respect for the seriousness of the matter. Their actions not only undermined the severity of the allegations but also reflected poorly on "SNL" for providing a platform for such tasteless behavior.

I don't know what these other people watched, but this was HORRIBLE. I realize that sometimes sketches bomb, but they had time to do this the right way. They had all the greatest writers AND actors right there at their disposal. I was really looking forward to watching this, and when it was over I was really kind of angry.
I remember hating the Don't Look Back in Anger sketch when I was a kid. It was bad then and it's worse now.
The song with Carpenter and Simon was excruciating. It was like they were on two different planets singing different songs.
I did like the cuts to the audience, and a few of the sketches were decent. Domingo is a STAR. It made me long for the days when every sketch was comedy gold. Now they are few and far between during the course of a regular weekly broadcast. They could have (and SHOULD have) done better for the 50th anniversary special.
