Watching the show it is blatantly obvious that Jodi and Ruby abused those kids; if you've followed the case even remotely you know that. Apparently the only person that does not know that is Kevin. The last interview of the whole show is Kevin saying that he still loves Ruby and throughout he posits that he would always pick Ruby over the children. I don't care how great your memories are with someone if you learn that they are abusive: let alone to children, YOUR children, and to such a degree that those children were abused; your perspective changes. If your perspective doesn't change that's because you knew or at least don't care. I hope none of those kids have any contact with Kevin ever again and that they finally get the support and love that their parents were supposed to provide.
Oh and Ruby and Jodi were definitely hooking up. Nothing like faking demon possession to get into your girlfriend's house and kick her husband out.

This doc was interesting far more detailed than what i was getting on TikTok.
I would like to put Ruby and Jodi aside from my review. These are two evil, mentally unstable, delusional psychopaths who were made for each-other.
Good riddance to both of them. I hope they rot in jail.
Now let's talk about the husband. This guy absolutely sucks and should be held just as responsible and investigated. His priorities are all over the place. He literally went with everything his wife said and condoned everything she did because he lacks the balls and intelligence (this grown ass man doesnt know what the word emaciated means fyi) to stand up for his kids. He knew exactly what his wife was capable of and he stood by and let it happen like the pathetic greedy fool he is. Be a man and pull yourself together and get these kids out of her clutches! It should have been easy task!
This entire doc series, he acted as one of Rubys victim, but in actuality he was an enabler. Zero awareness. No thought process. Were we supposed to empathize with this sad sack? This guy ABANDONED his entire family and is blaming it on being brainwashed, no sir you were not brainwashed, you were just a pathetic excuse of a father and took zero accountability. The truth is, he got away scott free with no consequences.
He literally didnt do anything to help his children, all he thought about was himself, his greedy thirst over the YT money. He keeps blaming it on not having any contact for a year when he got kicked out of the house but couldnt pick up the phone to see what the kids were up to? He also had his oldest son and daughter's phone numbers blocked, so they couldnt reach him. I cannot believe he wasnt investigated for pure negligence at this point.
I only feel sorry for the two youngest children who missed out on the "youtube cash flow fairy" and instead got stuck with cult hell misery.
I seriously hope the kids are happy and healthy.
And I hope Kevin lives a miserable life.

I watched this interesting crime documentary thinking in the beginning it was going to be just about Ruby being the baddie, but the more I watched it the more I got annoyed by her labile husband Kevin in this little weird 'Pleasantville' town in Utah. The fact of the matter is that he condoned everything and I was surprised he wasn't charged or held accountable for gross negligence. He wasn't brainwashed at all. He just complied with everything his wife wanted without any objection. He could've saved his kids if he had been stronger. And then in the end him saying he still loves his wife? Has the man no self respect?
It was sad to see the kids suffer at the hands of a delusional and possessed mother and conwoman Jodi. By the way, that whole town and the other people that were in this documentary gave me the creeps. Not only were they passive and naive but also weird and plastic. The only person I really like was the oldest daughter Shari. She is a strong and normal woman. I hope all the other children will grow up to be like her.
I would've preferred to see this without the husband and perhaps also the eldest son as I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth. And so I think two episodes would've sufficed...

The fact that a mother can do all of this to her family and not have remorse,(I don't think she meant her apology). But KEVIN WHAT ARE YOU DOING. I'm not saying he should have got the same sentence but dude you were there before you got kicked out of the house. Both of these women are despicable and the hurt you see on Chad and Shari on the archived footage is haunting, Ruby just treating them like trash, screaming at them because she is recording. I don't ever want to see something like this happen to children, the pain they all have to live with now is beyond comprehension. I'm just glad they were put in jail before anyone was killed. Series was good, some stuff with Kevin needed to be addressed more.

So frightening that the Father and son, believing that they were being lied and deceived to by police about Jody and Ruby all the way until the very end of the documentary. Father still loving his wife despite everything she had done. And, from the very beginning, the millions of followers believing in the "cult" of Ruby despite evidence of craziness.
Not only is this family nuts, but the neighbors, the male therapist, everyone being interviewed sitting in their perfect living rooms all gave me chills. ...and then, OMG, reading that the son is now an internet influencer despite all the abuse he received from day of living in front of the camera all his life. His scars are not physical like his baby brother, but boy will they be mental.
As observed by other reviewers, the only breath of fresh air and sanity is the oldest daughter. I"ll also add to that the police officers. The one that found the daughter, stating he that couldn't help but break down and the female cop that said this was the weirdest interviews she had ever.
This documentary is not only a metaphor but cautionary tale of life in the U. S in the 21st century, where seems like everyone is brainwashed about everything via the bombardment of info via the internet.
And the craziness didn't stop there as every ad (in the version I watched) was sponsored by HIMS and HERS and how hair loss, weight loss, depression can all be achieved discreetly via ordering online pills and/or potions. These ads remind me of the snake-oil salesmen of the Old west.

Ruby Franke is where she belongs - in jail. Why isn't Kevin? This doc wants to make him the victims too. I understand he seems very weak, and he was completely infatuated with Ruby and would have done anything to make her love him. How he allowed Jodi Hildebrandt to move in with them is a mystery. He also let his wife sleep in Jodi's bed, under the auspices of protecting Jodi from the demons that she possessed. He gets kicked out of his own home by these two nut jobs; here a man would put his foot down and fight for the kids. Not Kevin. He left. His daughter Shari tries to reach out to him, she also shunned by the mad women. What does Kevin do? Blocks her from calling him again.
Honestly this doc should have been called: "Why is this guy not in jail with the other two".

The documentary Devil in the Family: Ruby Franke does a solid job exposing the horrifying abuse that Ruby and Jodi Hildebrandt inflicted, but it drags on way longer than necessary. The rare video footage is definitely the strongest part-it really shows how deep the manipulation ran.
Kevin Franke, though? Absolute failure of a father. The man ignored every red flag, let his kids suffer, and now wants to play the clueless victim. Watching him dodge accountability is infuriating. He either knew what was happening and did nothing, or he was so willfully ignorant that it's just as bad. Either way, he failed those kids on every level.
As for Ruby and Jodi, they're master manipulators who fed off each other's delusions. The documentary highlights how they controlled and twisted everything to fit their warped ideology. It's disturbing to see how long they got away with it.
Overall, this could've been a one-episode special rather than a dragged-out series. While the story is compelling, the pacing makes it feel stretched. Still, it's an important watch for exposing the dangers of extremist parenting and blind trust in so-called "family experts."

Documentary is great. Shows how terrible Ruby & Jodi are. The father was obviously brainwashed but he had to know some sort what was happening....probably just did this for the paycheck not the story.
Anyway, it is entertaining cause you see a manipulative Karen (Ruby) throughout her videos but the abuse she did to her children was the sad part. She was extremely controlling and it was funny how all her neighbors did not like her. Cutting off your children is insane when they did nothing, I feel like she started cutting off the older children because they couldn't be controlled anymore and she couldn't profit off of them cause they were becoming adults. Terrible person.

It absolutely blows my mind that there are people like these operating in our world. They are so completely consumed by delusions and magical fantasies that they actually act in their insane and inane beliefs. In truth, they use their false deities and revelations to advance their own agendas, prejudices, and desires for more money and more power. Then they lord or over their children and their families through punishment, denial of love and affection, and outright abuse. If any of them actually attempted to live the words ascribed to their mythical savior, they would share all of their wealth and resources with the poor and needy. Yet they never do. Grow up, you ridiculous fools and con artists.

Participating in this documentary is going to backfire on Kevin Franke as badly as the their eldest son's revelation of being deprived of his bedroom for seven months did for Ruby. As much as the Devil in the Family is about Ruby being the devil, we see Kevin, the devil's right hand man, trying to minimise his own guilt and involvement at every opportunity during this documentary. As a highly intelligent man who has a PhD and is a professor, he rationalises his complicity to alleviate the cognitive dissonance he intuitively feels at having let his children down by not protecting them from the abusive behaviours of his wife.
The defining scene for me was in episode 1 when he said, "I've learned there was a whole lot of horror that was going on in the shadows and behind the scenes". It then cut to Ruby aggressively handling her younger daughter, commanding her to "get down and be quiet". Kevin continued, "I had no idea this was going on in my family". The interviewer challenged him, "Did you really not?". The father was the one holding the camera; he had front row seats to his children's torment, that he participated in and is now conveniently obscured from his memory to distance himself from the shame.
A few scenes later, we see Ruby barking at Chad to "fake being happy" for their vlog and a despondent Chad replying, "I don't know if I can right now". While her entire identity hinged on her belief of herself as being the perfect mother, there is a clear distinction between delusion and reality. The greater the challenge towards this belief from her critics, the harder she pushed back and projected the blame elsewhere, including onto her children, so that she would remain perfect in her mind, and by extension in the eyes of their Mormon god. Incredulously, Kevin confessed in episode 3 that he was going to "support her over all his children" to save their marriage and that he still loved her even after everything she did came to light.
The reality is that the Frankes were abhorrent parents who used their children to prop up their own self-esteem, instead of giving their children unconditional love and allowing them the freedom of self-expression. As a result of Ruby's tyranny, Chad developed Oppositional Defiant Disorder and subsequently got expelled from school. Rather than look at what they were doing wrong, they blamed the child. There were so many opportunities for the father to put his foot down; time and time again he failed to grow a backbone to stand up to his wife and save his kids. If not for his compliance, Jodi Hildebrandt would have never entered the picture. Deplorable. I cannot give this more than a 4 for not going further to call the father out on his platitudes and excuses. It sickened me more to look at him than at her.

OK, I watched this three part series and I have to say it is worth watching, but very disturbing at the same time. The first two episodes were really intriguing, showing the development of the family and the progress that slowly got them to wear everything blow apart. The third episode is just heartbreaking, difficult to watch, and Sickening as the events unfold before your eyes. Tragic story for all involved. Would I recommend it, honestly I don't know, after finishing it I just looked at my wife and said that was messed up. I think it does show the weird things people do and search for to find happiness.

What those poor kids went through. This is why family vlogs and social media channels with families should be banned. The attention seeking parents exploit their children for attention and monetization and is abhorrent.
Of course they put on a good face for the public. They don't want you to see behind the scenes where kids are abused and exploited with zero ability to say no.
How long will this continue to happen before action is taken?
Ruby's husband is culpable in what happened. He seems to try and distance himself, but he lived in that home. Was there when the kids were demeaned, and assaulted. He should have gone to jail along with Ruby and Jodi.

As Episode 1 of "Devil In the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke" (2025 release; 3 episodes of 51 min each) opens, we are in "Springville, Utah", apparently nicknamed Happy Valley and we are introduced to the seemingly perfectly happy family of Kevin and Ruby Franke and their 6 kids. Ruby started a YouTube vlog called "8 Passengers" about their daily lives and it becomes a massive hit. At this point we are 10 minutes into Episode 1.
Couple of comments: let me state upfront that I was completely unaware of this story and these events. This is nothing short of jaw-dropping. How parents can turn on their own children as happens in these events is just beyond belief and comprehension. Separating the facts from the documentary is not always easy, but the film makers benefitted from Ruby's endless video-recording. What was shown on her YouTube channel was merely a select amount of footage. The Franke family turned over ALL of the other footage to the film makers, and the 2 oldest kids and Kevin also fully cooperate with the film makers and are interviewed extensively. As some others have noted, I find it strange that Kevin gets off scott-free but that is a story for another time.
"Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke" started streaming on Hulu 2-3 weeks ago. I happened to read a write-up about it last week in the NY Times that led me to checking it out. I did not know what was about to hit me. I ended up watching all 3 episodes in a single setting the other night. If you want to try and understand it all, I'd readily suggest you check it out and draw your own conclusion.

....That'sThat, for me; Influencer(s)-On-Influencer Crime. Really is EndOfTheRoad, with no where to run and nowhere to hide.
At the jar-opening start, there's a welcoming feeling of family, normalcy, and of course, happiness. Everything flips and falls apart when any form of interaction is shut out, and the only susceptible, yet overwhelming powerful force that gets through is in the form of vulnerabilities. For this Family, it was their Faith which was manipulated.
Could happen to anybody just about anywhere. Influencer have Followers, which makes them both dangerously powerful and vulnerable, at the same time.

"Devil in the Family" (2/27/25, 3eps, 50-min, Hulu) This documentary charts the rise and fall of Ruby Franke's "8 Passengers" Youtube channel. Hulu did a really good presentation with this, but the visual and audio redactions were annoying and apparently unnecessary since you can find a short 20/20 presentation of this on YT which has no such restrictions. When you watch you'll wonder how it took so very long for her abuse to be identified and stopped, especially regarding the Utah state agency whose JOB it is to investigate such matters! And husband/father, Kevin, is a sorry, pathetic character. He should've been prosecuted for criminal negligence, so much disgrace to spread around. And we find at the very end that she is eligible for parole in Dec 2026! That's horrifying, this monster should've been sentenced MUCH more harshly to 25 yrs hard time w/o the chance of parole. Finally, I hope people don't miss the incredible religious irony that in her effort to battle the evil in her children, she and Jodi exhibited the most heinous evil we dared imagine.

I am sick. I am glad that they are outing and talking about this horrid family and I'm hoping that this will lead to more acknowledgment of how terrible exploiting children online is and how dangerous it is, but truly how Kevin is allowed to act like a pathetic little victim, when he abandoned his children and he saw his children be abused and he did nothing disgusts me. Kevin is just as much an abuser as Ruby. He abandoned his children there he knew they were being hurt and he did nothing and he says he still loves her. If Ruby got out tomorrow he would abandon those kids and go back to her in a second and that makes me sick. Kevin is not an equal victim here. When there is one abusive parent and one parent allow allowing the abuse to happen, that is two abusive parents.

This whole story of 8 passengers and Connextions is so horrible to delve into. These children were being exploited just as child actors were and are, and don't have any protections. I admire Shari and how she's been an activist against family vlogging and also petitioning for protections for kids going through these sorts of things. I appreciate the way this documentary approached it, but I don't know if anyone else gets the feeling that Kevin is trying to be a victim. He is responsible, maybe not as heavily as Ruby and Jodi, but he's definitely responsible, and could have done more for them..

Unfortunately this was a horrible story, but I couldn't turn this off. Something about having all those home videos made it so much more real.
This documentary is the perfect example of so many topics. The biggest of them all aside from the obvious child abuse is MENTAL HEALTH!!!!!
There should be laws against Vlogging your family/children against their free will. They were NOT adults and you are the parent your job is to protect them!!! Not pay them $10 per day for participation! And the forcing them to act out everyday interactions annd emotions over and over to get the right "cut" is purely DISGUSTING!! . As a mom how could you not see unhappy they were!!!
The bottom line is this woman was not all there. She was unstable and easily manipulated. Jodi saw her coming from a mile away! Jodi is the evilest one in this entire case. There are plenty of people who give themselves to faith and don't end up fighting demons in an abusive cult. Look at all the other people in the neighboring area, they all had the same beliefs as the Franke family and yet they were sound mind to recognize when things got unhealthy.
Last, there are so many families out there right now like the Franke's, we haven't heard about the because they didn't make a YouTube channel or the children didn't make it to report them. It's awful and I hope this series wakes some people up that might be in this situation currently.
