Kim Hye-su, Lee Je-hoon, and Cho Jin-woong in Signal (2016)
Hyper Knife TV Series Review: Terrific Performances Anchor This Mostly Engaging Medical Thriller
Kim Hye-su, Lee Je-hoon, and Cho Jin-woong in Signal (2016)
South Korea has produced some of the most eccentric serial killers in reality, movies, and shows. Shows like Signal, Mouse, Flower of Evil, etc., have sometimes mirrored real-life serial murder cases and sometimes been completely fictional. “Hyper Knife” (Original title: Haipeo Naipeu), starring Park Eun Bin and Sol Kyung Gu in lead roles, is a fictional medical thriller that places itself as the thesis and antithesis of two warring psychotic surgeons.

Written by Kim Sun-hee and directed by Kim Jung-Hyun, “Hyper Knife” follows two extremely skilled genius neurosurgeons who also happen to be dangerous killers. They kill people, sometimes rather unreasonably, while engaging in a war of words, gestures, and ultimately egos. Highly egotistical and overconfident in their surgical abilities, consistently trying to outwit the other, this mentor-student duo of Choi Deok-hee and Jung Se-ok goes through ups and downs in their relationship to the point of obsession. Their egos...

‘Hyper Knife’ Episodes 1-2 Recap: Did Deok-hee Learn About Se-ok’s Secret?
Image
Medical dramas tend to focus on the exploits of medical personnel as lifesavers; however, Korean thriller Hyper Knife turns the noble ideal on its head as it revolves around a brilliant surgeon who has a penchant for taking lives. Well, the context, plot treatment, and storyline itself are much more well balanced to justify the inclusion of such a wild narrative choice than my one-line summation might suggest, but a killer doctor is definitely the hook of the series. Backed by visually pleasing cinematography, decent performances, and intriguing characterization, the two-episode premiere of Hyper Knife is bound to grab your attention and keep you expectant for the bigger picture.

Spoilers Ahead

What Went Wrong Between Dr. Choi And Dr. Jeong?

Throughout the two episodes of Hyper Knife, the narrative focus remains on the relationship between two brilliant neurosurgeons, senior Dr. Choi Deok-hee and the prodigy, Dr. Jeong Se-ok. The pilot...

‘Hyper Knife’: A Dark Exploration of Ambitional Betrayal and The True Cost of Knowledge.
Image
‘Hyper Knife’ dives into the breaking point of humanity, delving into the deeply intricate dynamics of a mentor-student relationship in the world of neurosurgery. Humans are complicated beings, we use our inherent self-centeredness in order to motivate ourselves to achieve our dreams, all while caring for the collective soul when needed. Inevitably when set goals begin to be threatened, we are compelled to do anything in our power to prevent our dreams from vanishing into the void of memory. The cost that ambition can impose within those swallowed by them, obliterates their sense of self. It molds their desires into chains, binding them to an unyielding pursuit of an ever-distant horizon. Stripping existence from its authentic meaning, leaving them hollow echoes of aspirations that were never truly theirs. Starring Park Eun-bin as the genius shadow neurosurgeon Jung Se-ok, Sul Kyung-gu as Jung’s former mentor, and Yoon Chan-young as the...
