Shallow Hypocrisy Wrapped in Tabloid Drama

Tabloid-style fake caring riddled with hypocrisy. This show criticizes people for seeking the limelight while shamelessly doing the same.

The first episode promises to focus on Bam, but it's painfully clear they didn't have enough material to carry the story. Instead, it rehashes tired Britney Spears narratives and shifts the spotlight onto a couple of ancillary characters who add little to the overall narrative.

What could have been an insightful exploration instead feels like a shallow attempt to exploit viewers' curiosity without offering anything meaningful or new.

MAX has fallen a great deal.

Terrible Dont Waste Your Time

I thought I was watching a documentary on Bam Margera. Instead I got a scattered mess of self absorbed no-name Millenial girls with mental health problems trying to promote their own stories, brands, and companies.

Hbo really missed the mark with this one. I supposed I should have checked the imdb score before starting this show.

Whoever directed this should find another line of work because this is one of the worst docs I have ever seen.

I would say that over 75% of this documentary was off topic and unrelated to Bam Margera at all.

The VR girl and the Legally Blonde attorney both need conservatory themselves...

Just awful

The first and hopefully last episode is supposed to tell us the story of bam matters but instead follows two psycho chicks and the beef they have against each other. I was following along with the whole BJ and Lima bit thinking it was just a little bit of background, but instead it was basically about them the whole episode. It was entertaining for the first 20 minutes or so when it delved into bans story and gave us some insight from Steve-o, but then just followed it up with trash afterwards. It was a complete waste of time, and whoever made this needs to have their degree or whatever they needed to make this dumpster fire revoked.

So bad

This feels like complete satire and so sad it is not. We are expected to demonize the woman who came up with a possible mental health solution because she does not have a degree and looks pretty? Because the crazy lawyer (?) with Pom poms in her hair and obsession with Britney Spears believes it was a conspiracy? Terrible programming. Tone deaf given our current state of affairs in the nation. I was looking for something more uplifting/kind.

It was so bad that I, someone that has never rated anything on IMDb, felt compelled to let everyone else know.

Not sure what that to say here but please don't waste your time. And HBO, SMH.

Gives a platform to ineptitude

Granted I'm only twenty minutes into the first episode about Bam Margera, but my initial reaction is how seriously this show wants to take people that honestly don't seem to know what they're doing or talking about. First you have Lima who watches Bam go on a rampage or listens to his mother yearn to have her son back, and this so called professional just stands there like a deer in headlights, with a complete look of bafflement on her face. She's the shining example of being in over your head.

Next we meet a YouTuber/influencer/apparent lawyer who can't even remember the oath she swore to become a lawyer. She has all the credibility of a homeschooled professional. She complains that people don't take her seriously while very much sounding like someone that shouldn't be taking seriously. She's also got pink panda ears in her hair which makes her look like a middle school girl fighting for attention.

I'm not really sure what the goal of this series is, but at the onset it is less an intent of journalistic integrity and more a sleezy tabloid show taking advantage of some truly weird people who have no idea they're being used.

Not sure why everyone hates Beth

The woman making comments is Beth Karas, she is an attorney and senior reporter or TruTV. She's worked on super high profile cases so if you haven't seen her, that's on you.

Anyway. I like the show. Each episode is different, some are better than others. Documentary style. Lot of hate in the reviews from the first episode but clearly nobody watched where this show came from in the first place. It's exactly what I expected from this show, the design, the information, the way they shape the stories. Exactly as expected if you have seen Beth and if you have watched the OG show.

You're all a bunch of whiners.

Not Ready for Prime Time

I'm watching the fourth episode now, and I will finish the series. But at this point it's just background noise.

The problem is that none of these cases, so far, is ready to be seriously reported. They're not concluded! Someone's in jail. Someone's awaiting trial. Why rush to production?

Surely there are other "curious" stories that could have been used. Those that do have an ending and not just hanging there?

I'm not surprised this series has such a low rating. It could have been interesting with better subject choices. It seems like the people involved could have had a good idea, but no plan as to how to do it.

Beth Karas gets annoying

Aside from the stories being uninteresting, the episodes being full of weird hippie types and each episode seems to go on forever, Beth Karas just gets more and more grating as time goes on.

Most docuseries have a different "expert" for each car, if not multiples per episode. But they just have Karas through the entire season. She doesn't really add any expertise or first hand knowledge of a case, she just recaps what was said in the prior 4 minutes.

The whole series seems low budget and amateurish. Usually MAX docs are really good, this feels like something from a 2nd rate cable network. Just bad.

Nothing to do with Bam

BJ needs to get her head checked. It is concerning that she is able to practice law.

Talking about how she cares about people and wants the real truth to get out. It is clear she has never dealt with someone who has mental health issues. They make stuff up, they hallucinate, they don't know what is real or fake.

Just because someone says something doesn't automatically make it the truth.

Sit back, do some real research and educate yourself on mental health before attacking people and their family.

As for Lima, I am sure her intentions were good and I personally don't feel she was involved in the death of Amanda but I do think she needs to get some credentials herself before subjecting people to her "treatment".

Both these ladies need to step out of the limelight and focus on being better humans.

They're embarrassing.

Mostly BJ though. She makes me sick to my stomach.

She's the opposite of Elle Woods the way she goes around attacking people and setting her psycho followers after people as well.

BJ needs to seek mental health treatment herself.

So funny!!!

If you're looking for gritty true crime documentaries or even docu-drama this is soooo not it!!

A bunch of salacious glossy BS. If it were part of a meal it would be the amuse-bouche: small, pretty, but just a bit of puff that's leaves you wanting a main dish.

This is just horrible. Filled with supposition and intentional misdirection that any lawyer who wasn't ejected from the darkened bowels of Disneyland wouldn't touch. The courtroom is no place to work out your own childhood "trauma", darling, so get ride of the pink mouse ears.

The whole show only shines a harsh light on how ignorant the US has become.

Trashy

The narrator is awful. Who is this woman and why is she qualified to comment on these stories. What's with the American flag in every shot she's in? Just in case you forgot what country you're in? Lol...She reminds me of one of those Fox News commentators. I can't stand her voice. This is tabloid nonsense. The narrator also ruined the third season of the curious case of Natalia. This show is supposed to be some kind of spinoff of that one. Oh how I long for the good ole days where truth mattered. What happened HBO? Why would you produce this trash? Just give us the information and quit trying to tell us what to think of it. It's an insult to your audience. I'm really disappointed.

TV Show about trauma made by people who don't understand it

Beginning with the Natalia Grace series, and continuing here, are stories about people who have been deeply abused and live a life greatly affected by it. We then are treated to a bunch of anecdotal interviews by people who have little understanding of trauma responses, expressing their confusion at the actions of a traumatized person, with little nuance or explanation of how trauma affects a person and their ability to act 'normally'.

While I can understand the average neighbor not having the foreknowledge of trauma responses and how a person can appear strange to outsiders or even loved ones, the show runners live in the current era and have no excuse for not acknowledging this as an important topic of discussion.

Hire a therapist to sit there with that lawyer lady, give us the legal perspective along with the mental health perspective.

Refreshing honesty

BJ Investigates, aka That Surprise Witness TV, has been an active cyberstalker threatening journalists, attorneys, and mentally ill people for likes on YouTube for several years. She definitely uses her law degree to manipulate mentally impaired people online with conspiracy theories that are so out there that she should wear a tin foil hat for eternity. She promotes disinformation about the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and encourages her sycophants to issue stochastic terrorism against others. This includes doxxing, swatting, false reporting people to CPS and lying to the police, claiming people are suicidal, to weaponize welfare checks. I can't even use my real identity to review her dangerous YouTube channels because she'll organize her cult via Discord to go after anyone who speaks out against her. She should be in prison because she's very aware that what she's doing is domestic terrorism that increases the risk of death by swatting and her bullying increases her victims' risk of suicide. She will not stop until the police get involved. Reporting to YT doesn't do enough, but maybe this episode will be.

I did felt insulted as a viewer

I'm usually against rating a show after just 1 single episode but in this case I'll throw an exception once the first episode, the one about Bam Margera, is just so bad that we may say it's about anything, but Bam Margera. Not only the episode doesn't actually focus on Bam, Bam himself has told he didn't know about this show nor allowed the production to use his name or face. The few we see about Bam and his troubles has no credibility. So why put his name on the title? Seems to me the production knew their show is terrible and used Bam's name just to attract viewers. I lost any interest on the rest of the show because if they were that bad at first, I can't trust further episodes will met any quality or credibility. I just don't trust it. Major time loss to watch it. Also, it hurts my trust on other Investigation Discovery and/or Hot Snakes Media peoductions.

Really good

The cases are really good and cover a variety of recent events I hadn't seen anything about. I'm pretty sure most of the 1 and 2 star reviews are people who agree with the cults and personalities painted in a bad light. I would recommended it to anyone who likes deep dive YouTube videos from people like Wendigoon, Atrocity guide, or Fredrick Knudsen. I'll be honest, I'm reviewing high to offset negative ratings. I'd say 8/10 really. My only complaint it the lack of show structure, there's one consistently person who comments on the events shown, but she neither introduces or ends the show. When we watched the first episode we thought it was a one off documentary because we weren't sure it was a show until it previewed after the episode.
